My Review:

Nina has one more semester left before she graduates from High School, but first she has to get through her radio broadcasting class. What she expected as an easy A turns into something much more complicated and brings up things from her past she would rather stay in the past- including her neighbor Jaime. Nina needs to figure out how to pass her class, deal with her changing family dynamic and come to terms with what Jaime really means to her.

I have a confession- this is my first Emma Mills book! I own a few of her backlist titles and so many people rave about how cute they are so I had good intentions to read her books I just have not had a chance yet- until now. Lucky Caller was fantastic, so sweet and adorable and yet funny at the same time. I devoured this book, sad when I had to put it down and I ended up reading it over the course of just a few days. I found the story to be so approachable, easily to get lost in and with characters that I rooted for, flaws and all. As someone who listen to the same radio show every morning, the radio dynamic felt perfect, at times as if I was listening to the radio instead of reading a book.

The main point of this book is relationships, be it familial, friendship or romantic. Sure there is a purpose to the story, to make the radio show work out, but it was so much more than that- it was to show the dynamics between the characters and the overall growth of Nina, and that each moment matters, no matter how big or how long it lasts (wipe a tear). I absolutely loved the slow burn love with the most honest and decent of boys, I shipped them so hard from the first awkward encounter (the special cake was a winner for sure!). The friendships were fun to watch develop, strangers who work together for a cause that end up being "bros" (don't ask, just read) who care and root for each other. And finally, the familial love was so wonderful, the support and friendship between the sisters was sweet but also the acceptance of The Dantist melted me just a little bit. I kinda feel like reading this was like getting the best, most supportive hug possible.

The formatting of the story was hands down my favorite part of the book though. The overall plot takes places over the course of one semester in high school, but mixed in were random chapters that helped to give backstory as well as character development- and sometimes just random humor. We get chapters with Nina's dad's radio show transcripts, Nina's radio show transcripts, classmate's radio transcripts, as well as memories of certain moments in the past that were important to Nina. Putting all the pieces together you get a cohesive flow that made for a delightful read.

I can't wait to finally dive into the other books by this author I already own because if they are even a fraction as entertaining as Lucky Caller I know I will love them. I highly recommend this for anyone who likes Ya contemporaries, family drama, slow burn romance, great relationship dynamics overall and relatable realistic characters- and if a radio show has every been important to you.

Review: Sick Kids in Love by Hannah Moskowitz

My Review:

3.5 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Heart, Romance, Teen--

Isabel always felt like there was something wrong with her, something overlooked that nobody else knew but her. So when she was finally diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, she felt justified to belong to the sick kids group. When she meets a cute boy while at her quarterly infusion treatment, she thinks nothing of it. Little did she know that he would become such an important part of her life.

I was so excited to read this story, you have no idea. Everyone who knows me knows of my crazy irrational love for all kinds of illness books (death books as my family lovingly refers to them) ever since I was little. Anything having to do with illness and yes, potential death, I find super interesting and I gobble up. When I saw that this was about two chronic illnesses that really not mentioned in the grand scheme of being sick literature (I may have spiraled down the rabbit hole of researching both conditions once I started reading to gain a better understanding), I knew I was going to read the story. Add in the fact the author mentions that they don't die and I was looking forward to this YA contemporary love story.

I found the relationship to be cute, the banter seemed endearing and all the medical treatments and symptoms (based on previously mentioned research) seemed pretty realistic. I loved Sasha and his upbeat life view, I kind of wanted to adopt both him and his quiet sister Nadia, I found them so adorable. I really liked how open minded Isabel's friends were towards trying to understand at the end and I think that is something everyone can attempt to do with those in their life.

The one thing I struggled a little with was Isabel herself. She was moderately abrasive and combative, making me have a hard time liking her. Sure she was interesting as a character, but as she even admitted, she was more selfish than Sasha was and didn't want to change. Which is fine, don't change for a boy, totally on board with that, but she was a little inflexible when it came to all her relationships, everyone else had to get with her plan. Also, it seemed a little like being sick was her personality/identity, which might be true but I could not relate since I personally have so many things to identify as- but keep in mind I am not sick, so this might be true for those who struggle with chronic illness and I have no frame of reference.

Overall this was a fast, cute romance (where nobody died) and I would easily pick up another read from this author in the future.

Fairy tales with all the shine taken away from them were simply stories of desperation. Of hungry wolves devouring children and jealous stepsisters who hacked off their own toes to fit inside a glass slipper.

Dee's home life is not great, so much so that she goes off to a boarding school so she can avoid being at home. But when her scholarship runs out and her school life is in jeopardy, Dee will do anything to stay away- even if that means making a deal with a Demon. In a world where people can trade body parts for any asked for reward by making a deal, what will Dee give up to continue to escape her life?

“We’re all just moments and most of us don’t matter. We study less than one percent of all humanity in our history books.”
“And you’re going to be part of that one percent?” asked Dee.
“I just want to matter,” he said, unsmiling.

The Hearts we sold ripped out my heart, and yes I am sure that sounds cheesy (and so appropriate for the title/plot!), but it is true. This is the second book that I have now read by this author and I am pretty sure I am a fangirl now, I will consume her words and never let them go. I have no idea how making a deal with a demon- for a body part, potentially saving the world, dynamite, family drama, romance, monsters, made families, and heartbreak (even when you don't have a heart) go together, but I can confirm that they do- in the best of ways possible.

For a YA alternate universe with magic, this book covered a lot of hard topics and had some potent moments that made me cheer, melt- or even cry. I was not even a little bit expecting the tears let alone emotions of any kind when I started reading, that is until I finished the book at 2am one night and had to explain to my husband why I was up so late sobbing my heart out. I highly recommend this story (like so much so that I have purchased copies for all my reader friends to experience) for anyone who like YA, an overall great story and feels. The Hearts We Sold was wholly unique and pretty much magical. I can't believe I waited so long to read this story but I am ever so glad that I finally did.

She had walked willingly into a fairy tale, into a world where she could trade her heart for her freedom. She may as well have donned a red cloak and strode into a darkened forest. She had always known there would be wolves. I chose this.

My Review:

5 Out Of 5 Hearts

April has a completely new life and a made family that has supported her for the last five years after she turned her back on her powerful father and his illegal ways. But when one of her friends is in trouble, April puts aside her feelings about her father to help her friend out. But she never expected Jonas to show back up in her life.

I have been having a really hard time getting into books recently, probably due more to me and my reading funk then the books to be honest, but somehow, without fail, Tricia is able to instantly engage me in her world, right from page one. I picked up this story and did not want to put it down until I finished, real life be damned. Passion Punch is my third read in the Key West Escape series and I have loved each one. While technically these are all standalone stories with a different couple and mystery in each book, they all take place in the same small world and the characters cross over. I highly recommend reading the series in order for the full effect and backstory, BUT feel free to jump into the series wherever you want.

We have met April a few times now throughout the series, so I feel like I had a pretty good idea about the kind of person she is with her big heart and forgiving ways. She was the spoiled rich girl who never really acted spoiled, but was kind and generous with her money and feelings and had to make a hard choice. But Jonas has basically been a stealth ninja, sneaking into the background occasionally but never explaining the whys and hows and I had SO MANY questions about him. Well, Passion Punch answered them all and then some and I heart Jonas and his loneliness, poor self view and danger seeking ways. I just wanted to hug the man and tell him he has worth regardless of his upbringing...and then maybe feel him up a little...you know, for research sake...

Overall I really enjoyed this book. I never expected the rest of the the series to live up to Rum Runner, which was absolutely fantastic, but I was wrong. Each book in the series has the perfect mix of romance, action/adventure, danger and a dash of humor that makes me fly through the pages yet at the same time I never want it to end. The ending to this was everything I hoped for, basically a reunion with all my favorite characters and even though there are no more Ostergaard brothers, I would love another book set here! Tricia is a fantastic romantic suspense author and I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves the genre or wants the perfect escapism read and I will attempt to patiently wait for more.

My Review:

Genre: Heart, Romance, Teen--

April is the black sheep of her family, seen as the irresponsible younger sister, but in reality she works hard at soccer and even may have a future due to her skills. Jenn is the diligent, hard working older sister who just can't deal with her parent's fighting anymore- and has a secret looming over her. April knows that something is bothering Jenn but since they are not close anymore she has no idea what. Instead, she decides to make a special day for Jenn, a day that goes horribly wrong- in the best of ways.

I can't remember the last book I read that had a positive or important sibling relationship in it. Actually, I can't remember the last book that had any kind of sibling relationship. Usually, siblings either do not exist or are briefly mentioned as world building, not as real people which is pretty unrealistic if you think about the story as real life. That being said, I was really excited when I heard about She's the Worst and it was a book that was predominantly about the love hate thing between two sisters. And sure there are other topics like growing up and a cute unexpected romance, but the focus of the book was the up and down relationship dynamic between Jenn and April and I was so there for that!

Overall I really liked getting to know April and her spunk and Jenn and her steadfastness- but I absolutely could not stand the parents in the story. This was my first book by Lauren and I loved her writing style and pacing, she was able to get me to read "just another chapter" until I had finished the book without being able to put it down. I will gladly read more from her in the future. I highly recommend She's the Worst if you are a fan of YA contemporary, relationship drama, cute blossoming romance and coming of age stories.

My Review:

4 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Audiobook, Heart, Romance--

I am such a sucker for the forbidden romance trope books so when I learned that this was a potential step-sibling relationship I was ready to jump into the story. A light-hearted romantic comedy was just what I was looking for, the perfect fluffy read to get sucked into. There were so many times that I felt like my heart was breaking for Emma and I wished that I had a copy of the physical book so I could cheat and make sure that there was a happy ending because to be completely truthful I felt like my heart was breaking for Emma most of the book. I know the book is listed as a romantic comedy but I found almost none of it funny. The story pulled out the big guns with the emotional buttons, be it the death and depression from the loss of a loved one, unrequited love, and family drama, but on occasion I felt like I wanted to cry for the Emma and all the awful that was piled on her. That being said I enjoyed the story a lot, it was heartfelt and pulled me in and I rooted hard for a Emma/Sawyer love match in the worst of ways.

There were two reasons why I gave the book 4 stars instead of five. Firstly, the continuous mentioning of Emma's weight. I am in full support of her being a full figured woman, but at times it felt like her weight/squishy thighs/round stomach/eating habits was thrown in my face at every turn and occasionally it seemed to define her- she was the overweight female friend. I wanted her to own her body and looks, but instead she was so wishy washy- one minute saying how she loved who she was and the next hating herself and choices. A few mentions would have been ok, but it was too self deprecating for me to get behind. Second reason was the ending. Yes it was the HEA that I expected, but there was a lot of chaos and upheaval in the last part of the book and the happy wrap up felt a little rushed and was maybe only 20 minutes of the almost 7 hour book.

I absolutely loved the narrator, Melissa's performance was spot on. She did a fantastic job of bringing Emma to life, making her into a real person that I empathized with as well as creating new voices for the other characters as well. I would listen to her narrator more audiobooks in the future. Overall I really enjoyed this entire experience and I would love to listen to the next standalone romance in the My Not So Wicked series featuring the side character Shelby who was hysterical in this book.

Melissa Moran is a former radio personality who has won both a CMA (Country Music Association) and ACM (Academy of Country Music) award for broadcasting. In addition to commercial voice-over work, theater, on-camera roles, and improvisational comedy, Melissa has narrated over 175 audiobooks in many different genres. Originally from Massachusetts, Melissa traded in her winter coat for flip flops and now resides in sunny Florida.
