Review: Wings of Fury (Wings of Fury #1) by Emily R. King

Book Blurb:

My mother told me that men would speak about the Golden Age as a time of peace and happiness for all… However, the women of our age would tell a very different story…

Cronus, God of Gods, whose inheritance is the world. Among his possessions: women, imprisoned and fated to serve. The strong-minded Althea Lambros controls her own fate and lives to honor her dying mother’s plea to protect her two sisters at all costs. Althea’s journey toward crushing the tyranny has begun. It is a destiny foretold by the Fates. And she is following their visions.

On the southern isle of Crete, hidden among mortal women who have fled the Titans, is the Boy God, son of Cronus and believed dead. He shares Althea’s destiny to vanquish the Almighty—fate willing. Because Cronus has caught wind of the plot. He’s amassing his own forces against Althea’s righteous rebellion and all those who will no longer surrender or run. There will be war. If she’s to survive to write their history, the indomitable Althea must soar higher than any god.

My Review:

4 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Another-World, Retelling, Romance, Royal-Court, Supernatural, Suspense--

Wings of Fury was a super interesting take on the origins of the Greek Gods, told from the unsuspecting eyes of a girl who just wanted her freedom. I have come to expect strong female characters and lots of action from this author and this was another great example of that. I enjoyed how this took the traditionally excepted Greek mythology and ran with it to create something new and fresh from the typical with some surprising twists I could not have predicted.

While the ending was for the most part (or at least at a temporary truce) resolved, this is the first book in a series and there is so much more to come with what I expect to be a crazy epic battle with the Titans. Side note for those familiar with the author's other books, this is not a YA novel, more a New Adult series due to sexual content.

Keep an eye out for the next book in the Wings of Fury Series:

Althea’s head is still spinning from her discovery that she’s Hera, daughter of Cronus, the terrible Titan king. Lukas, Althea’s friend and confidant, hides her and her godly siblings, but they can’t run forever. She must recruit allies from the younger Titans before the afflicted mortals turn them into Cronus in exchange for peace.

The Stolen Kingdom
by Jillian Boehme
Genre: YA Fantasy

A bold girl, a kingdom under attack, magic everywhere—I devoured it in one sitting! This book is one wild ride!” —Tamora Pierce on Stormrise

Nothing is quite as it seems in this thrilling YA fantasy adventure by Jillian Boehme, The Stolen Kingdom!

For a hundred years, the once-prosperous kingdom of Perin Faye has suffered under the rule of the greedy and power-hungry Thungrave kings. Maralyth Graylaern, a vintner's daughter, has no idea her hidden magical power is proof of a secret bloodline and claim to the throne. Alac Thungrave, the king’s second son, has always been uncomfortable with his position as the spare heir—and the dark, stolen magic that comes with ruling.
When Maralyth becomes embroiled in a plot to murder the royal family and seize the throne, a cat-and-mouse chase ensues in an adventure of dark magic, court intrigue, and forbidden love.

My Review:

3.5 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Another-World, Romance, Royal-Court, Supernatural, Suspense, Teen--

Maralyth wants nothing more than to be part of her father's winery, instead of just given the task of cooking and cleaning up after her father's employees. When she ends up getting kidnapped by a wealthy lord who knows about her forbidden magic and says she is destined for more, Maralyth has no idea what to think. Alac is the leftover, basically useless second son of the king, but he wants nothing to do with the dark magic that is passed through his family. Instead, Alac longs to be able to open his own winery and let his passions out, instead of being confined to the life of a royal. When Maralyth and Alac meet, empires will fall, magic will rule and nothing will ever be the same.

I will say that I did not know that I was picking up a book that was basically a love letter to wine- be it drinking, making, growing, or discussing it. Seriously, both the main characters' whole lives revolved around wine and the kingdom in general focused on having the best wine. It was discussed A LOT, and as someone who occasionally enjoys a cheap out of the box pink wine (and I have no complaints about it), I am no expert and I can confirm that I have zero interest in learning more about the process/quality.

Overall I liked that this was a standalone fantasy that was not crazy long, everything resolved in an acceptable manner and was entertaining in general. There was a romance that ran through the plot as well so all you romance lovers will appreciate that, but overall this was about standing up for your birthright, using magic to benefit society and squashing the currently monarchy. I recommend this for anyone who likes light fantasy with some magic, court intrigue, romance and not having to wait for another book in a series to get answers (which I fully support!).

My Review:

4.5 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Angels, Another-World, Romance, Royal-Court, Supernatural, Suspense--

As per the norm, I highly recommend you read all the series before starting this story so that way you can catch all the nuisance details included and the relationship dynamics. But, all that being said, I feel like this is a pretty solid novel that could work as a standalone, with enough backstory to get your feet wet and a completely new and unique adventure that requires no introduction and resolves within this book alone.

I love how this story was delivered. While this was a Lincoln book, it is dual narrated at chapters by Myla and Lincoln, and each chapter is super fast making read "just one more" until the book was finished, much to my surprise. The pacing was fantastic and there was never a dull minute. The author also uses two very distinct voices for Myla and Lincoln, which helps to showcase their personalities. Myla is full of hot-headed impulse choices and snark whereas Lincoln is the epitome of calm, rational and well controlled. I have always been a big fan of the dynamic between the two and this was another great read to reinforce that they are one of my favorite literary couples.

I am pretty sure that if there was a competition for most stupid and evil villain, Lincoln's own father would probably win (in my totally biased mind). In the previous books I didn't like him, I found him to lack a backbone and be easily manipulated, but in this book I really hate him. And no, he is not the villain or enemy in this story, but still he is the well deserved target for my wrath- read the book and tell me you disagree.

Overall this was another solid installment in the Angelbound saga, full of awesome action and the best battle scenes a girl could hope for (including new and crazy supernatural badies to discover)- as well as plenty of warm and fuzzy feels and snark. Oh and pictures at the end of a lot of chapters that really hekped to set the stage for the story

My Review:

4.5 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Audiobook, Fairytale, Heart-Wrenching, Retelling, Romance, Royal-Court, Supoernatural, Suspense--

Larkin was supposed to be watching her little sister when she realizes that her sister wandered into the Forbidden Forest, the place nobody ever returns from. Understanding that she will not get help from the superstitious town, she plunges into the forest to try and find her sister, irrevocably changing her life in ways nobody could have predicted.

We start the book with Larkin secretly in love with her friend Bane, who seems like an ok guy (I guessed a secret about him from the start but overall he was not a bad guy per se) but once we meet Denan, the guy who basically kidnapped her, I was in love. No, Larkin was not a victim of Stockholm syndrome, she wanted nothing to do with Denan and still loved her friend (much to my chagrin, I seriously wanted to shake this girl at some points- her bad choices moved the book from 5 stars to 4.5 since I was so mad at her). But I still loved Denan. He gave Larkin a choice and options, respected her views and wants regardless of them being conflicting with his own and was overall a really decent person. Keep in mind that this is not a romance story (there is a teeny tiny smidge but not a ton), but I adored watching the two of them develop a relationship through many adversities.

I purchased this forever ago as an ebook when it first came out (I mean seriously, Beauty and the Beast meets The Pied Piper? Yes please!) because I was super excited to read it but never got a chance. When I saw it was an audio, I jumped at the chance to listen to the story. The narrator was perfect at bringing Larkin to life, giving her personality and spunk and having a clear precise diction, as well as doing a great job creating distinct voices for the other characters. I would love for the rest of the series to be on audio and be narrated by this same voice. Keep in mind I listened at 1.75x speed which was just about perfect.

I really enjoyed this read and can't wait to continue the series. While this did not end on a cliffhanger, I have so many questions and concerns about what will happen and the overall fate of Larkin and Denan. I highly recommend this for anyone who loves fairytales and retellings full of action, magic and surprises.

There are worse things than death.

With the rise of Varia d’Malvane comes the fall of the Mist Continent. Cavanos is overrun by the brutal rampage of the valkerax, led by its former crown princess. Vetris is gone. Helkyris is gone. As each mighty nation falls, the grip of the crown princess closes around the throat of the world.

Seemingly unstoppable, Varia can track Zera through her dreams, ensuring there is nowhere to run. Thankfully, an ancient book holds the key to stopping the incursion forever.

But at what cost comes freedom?

At what cost comes love?

At what cost comes the end of the world, and the beginning of a new one?

Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | Entangled

My Review:

4.5 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Another-World, Heart-Wrenching, Romance, Royal-Court, Supernatural, Suspense, Teen, Witches--

Zera's complete life (un-life?) is in shambles, the choice to follow her current witch master versus her need to be with Prince Lucien and his newly discovered magic battles in her. Who does she choose to protect and will her choice cost those she loves their lives? Zera is about to enter the ultimate battle for her own freedom as well as everyone in the kingdom's freedom- and not everyone will survive what is to come.

I strongly recommend for you all to race out (or go online to your favorite online bookstore) and snag a copy of each book in the trilogy asap. Once you start it will be very hard to put it down and you will really, really want to know how everything plays out. That being said, this review will be super short so not to spoil what has been 3 incredibly epic books in making to get to this conclusion. I feel like I have been waiting forever for this conclusion, while at the same time I had been dreading reading this because I was so nervous that my people where not going to get the HEAs I so hoped for them- and I selfishly I didn't know if I was ready to say goodbye.

"I've barely worked a day in my life."

"You've worked quite a lot! With your brain."

"Brains are not hands."

"They're basically the same thing."

"If they were, perhaps we'd have an easier time holding on to our thoughts." She pauses, her grin miniscule. "This conversation is complete nonsense. You're rubbing off on me."

I grin back. "Unfortunately."

I highly recommend this series (and basically anything by this author but for other reasons) if you are a fan of fantasy worlds, heart wrenching choices, a heroine who never stops with the snark and the random string-of-consciousness commentary that fills me with joy, a prince with a heart of gold, zombie like creatures, witches and deadly magic, end of the world battles and a romance that is so sweet it can melt the coldest heart (or the heartless). I am so glad that I got to experience this series and I will gladly push it on everyone I know with complete abandon.

“Myla is a magnificent heroine, fierce and outspoken, hilarious and mischievous … And did I mention that her demon tail is sentient? Best. Sidekick. Ever.” – The Nocturnal Library

Myla Lewis has her life back. Wife. Mother. Queen. Great Scala. Queen of the Thrax. Yay! Then one day, Myla runs across a supernatural waterfall that makes her igni screech like crazy. Our heroine speaks the fateful words, “Some days, I wish I weren’t the Great Scala.”

The waterfall grants her wish.

A moment later, Myla is back at Purgatory High. No husband. No child. No powers beyond her old quasi days. And without Myla around as the Great Scala, all quasis now live under Armageddon’s rule. That sucks. Hard. So Myla sneaks into Antrum—she simply must find Lincoln and figure this out. Once she arrives, two problems arise.

First, her husband doesn’t know her. At all.

Second, Lincoln is married to someone else.

My Review:

5 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Angels, Romance, Royal-Court, Supernatural, Suspense--

Keep in mind that if you are not familiar (like really super familiar, also know as you read all the previous books in order) then I very much do not recommend jumping in here. Quasi Redux basically throws the reader (and you know, the main characters) right into the action with tons of danger- and a scary megaladon encounter- and absolutely no backstory.

I will read anything that deals with Myla and Lincoln and this super intricate angel/demon supernatural world but I was a little hesitant to start this book because the synopsis sounded a little sad and after having read Thrax and experiencing the heart break that was the Lincon/Myla situation there, I didn't know if I was up for more heartbreak. But since I had to know what would happen, I of course had to pick Quasi Redux up. I was so surprised (in the best of ways) to find that this was sorta, kinda a Beauty and the Beast retelling. I am such a sucker for fairytale retellings and Beauty and the Beast is hands down my favorite, and having Myla and Lincoln inserted into this storyline (with of course all the action, danger, fighting and sarcasm provided by Myla- she is not the sweet soft spoken Beauty of the fairytale and I love that about her.

Overall this was another solid installment in the Angelbound series that I am so glad I did not miss. Who would have thought that prehistoric sharks, fairytales, forced marriage, prison escapes, magical yard sales, The Great Scala action figured and lawn ornaments and curses would all mesh so well into a fast paced, entertaining story that I could not put down. I really like how the author has the ability to keep this storyline fresh, always a pleasant surprise that keeps me guessing and completely engaged. I am so here for the Myla/Lincoln HEA.

TEMPTING THE PRINCE

by Christi Barth

Sexy Misadventures of Royals, #3

Publication Date: August 24, 2020

Genres: Adult, Entangled: Amara, Contemporary, Romance, Royalty

I can tell you from experience—a whole lot of complications.

You see, four months ago, my all-American sister, Kelsey, found out that she’s not actually my sister—she’s a princess of a country we’d never heard of. She begged me to come along when she was whisked off to her new palace, so here I am. An outsider who doesn’t fit in anywhere.

Now that she’s settled, I should go back to my exciting new career in New York. I absolutely should not stay in a country where I got shot (long story), where I suck so badly at the national sport that I accidentally murdered the symbol of the monarchy in front of half the country, and—oh yeah—where I can’t stop ogling Kelsey’s actual brother.

The Crown Prince.

The man who has to marry a very important princess. (not me)

The man who must create the next heir to the throne. (without me)

The man I absolutely can never be with. (remember that long story?)

The man who just gave me the best sex of my life…

Did I mention that it’s complicated?

My Review:

4 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Romance, Royal-Court--

Be aware that this is the third book in the series. But that being said, I have not read the first two books in the series and felt like Tempting the Prince stood just fine on it's own. I loved this book and did not feel like I was missing out on anything. I do now really really want to read the first two books but I have zero regrets reading this out of order. I will say that the ending of this book appeared to wrap up the relationships from all three books, so it might spoil those for you (but I love spoilers, so I was not bothered in the slightest).

And in here, I’m as safe as the palace. This is a Royal Protection Service hangout. Half these tables are filled with off-the-clock bodyguards.”

Mallory whipped her head left and right, taking in the relaxed crowd and noting that nobody looked out of control. Or desperate. Or even rough around the edges. It was the Disneyland version of a bar; spotless, charming, and far from exciting.

This was the perfect combination of charming, romantic, royal-court politics and heat. I read this book on a weekend, completely swept up in the characters. I loved both the main characters as people as well as a couple and the story was dual narrated which is my favorite for a romance. Tempting the Prince is much more about the people than the plot, dealing more with character depth and relationship dynamics.

This is a great book (or series, apparently) for anyone who loves themselves some royal family, relationship drama, and the best kind of HEA.

You do have a reputation for… I don’t know…” She leaned in closer. “Getting off on getting women out of ballgowns?” Then she and Kelsey burst into giggles.

“For Christ’s sake. These balls are deadly dull. Hooking up’s my reward for getting through the evening.”  After tsking , Kelsey said solemnly, “Women are neither cookies nor medals, Christian.”

“I know that. Believe me, every one of them was ready to hand me a medal for exemplary service by the time we finished . Nobody was used. And no promises were made.”
