My Review:

Genre: Fairytale, Heart-Wrenching, Historical, Supernatural, Teen, Witches--

Broken Wish spans the lives of a mother and daughter and the unforeseen consequences of choices. Agnes longs to have a child and when her new friend says she can help she is excited by the opportunity- except that her new friend is called a witch by the townspeople and her husband fears the scorn of those people if Agnes continues her friendship. Fast-forward 16 years, Agnes' daughter Elva has been told to keep her powers a secret for fear of being scorned by the townspeople. But Elva longs to know more about what she is capable of, especially when she has had a vision of danger, so she goes on a quest to find a witch...

To be completely honest, while I appreciate the plot and the magic of the story, I found this book to be really sad (I guess as all real fairytales were, with a lesson to be learned). All acts have consequences and fate will find you no matter how you try to hide. There were so many moments that I wanted to intervene (particularly with ALL of Agnes' choices) and shake sense into the character, but alas without bad choices we would not get the magic of fairytales and lessons.

While this story wrapped up completely, this is the first book in a series where each book is written by a different author about different characters and I am interested to see where this series will go next.

Broken Wish was basically a love letter to all the fairytales out there. This story took bits and pieces from so many well loved and know stories to create something so unique and wonderful, something that felt like it belonged among the classic tales itself while still being unique. I also loved how the author occasionally mentioned the Grimm brothers and their quest to write the real tales in this book, adding a layer or reality to what would otherwise be a fantasy. I would recommend this to anyone who loves the magic of fairytales as well as the idea that you better be careful what you wish for.

While this is the 6th book in the Gaslamp Gothic series, I feel like new readers can easily jump right into this book. Balthazar has been introduced in previous books in the series as a side character, this is his true first story where he is the main character and the mystery is completely new. This very much can stand on it's own, so it is the perfect read for anyone who likes historical fiction with some supernatural flair.

It was really only a matter of time until Balthazar got himself into serious trouble, and that is what this book it. Fighting off a bout of boredom and unrest, he finds a woman who intrigues him enough to have him pursue her on to a journey through Egypt, one that could very easily cost him his life. Through things he can't control (but is pretty much his own fault), Balthazar's life has turned completely upside down

I am so here for the Balthazar/ Lucas adventures! Every book that Balthazar pops up in, usually just a few pages here and there, I have wanted to know more and here it is. Finally I get to see more of the banter I have come to love from this super entertaining odd couple. Balthazar is this flamboyant risk taker who loves to be seen and seduce, such a loud personality full of spunk and snark, an immortal who is getting bored with his life. Lucas on the other hand was saved and raised by Balthazar as a child and now as a man is incredibly practical, more the level headed of the two who always seems to get them out of jams but appears to have the soul of an old man who would rather stay home, relax and eat digestive biscuits- and have dry one liners I adore.

Balthazar's Bane wrapped up nicely, leaving (almost) no loose ends, even if it was a little bit bittersweet. I look forward to more from Balthazar and Lucas as well as the rest of the gang in a future installment in this interesting, twisty series.

Eris does her best to keep her head down and her mouth closed, because when she doesn't, her words can make people do anything she asks. Eris longs for a simple life away from the speakeasy and big city, but what she never expected was to encounter someone like Colt. Colt is a monster hunter for a task force that takes down the monsters that walk among man, having trained his whole life for one target- the last siren...who just so happens to be unsuspecting Eris.

Whatever the case, part of me loved that he could resist— even if it put me in more trouble. Maybe it made me a masochist, but the fact that we could carry on a conversation without his gaze going blank made me happy. Finally, I’m heard.

This was such a cool idea for a book! We have the real life vibe of the 1920's with the flappers and slang, making it feel very authentic and like I was reading a historical fiction. And then we have the creepy, twisty parts of the underground world of monsters (all varieties, be it sirens, cyclops, vampires, minotaurs and all other kinds of intense beasties) seamlessly meshed with history. The world building in this story was hands down my favorite part of the book, the layers of complexity in this underground world where liquor is illegal, girls are looking for freedom, and mob bosses rule- but they might not be human.

Roaring is my second read from this author and I love how she can make such intense worlds and characters within the pages of a single book, you can pick this up and enjoy a complete story with a satisfying conclusion and a great love story. Also expect action/danger as well as some surprising twists as you get lost in this book. I enjoy that this wrapped everything up and left me with no loose ends, but I will say that I would love for her to someday return to this secret monster underground and write another book in this world. Pick this up if you enjoy monsters, fights, historical fiction, unlikely heroes saving the day and most of all romance.

I do not really ever seek out historical fiction to read, it is usually just not my thing, but after hearing this author talk about her debut book The Last Word at a book event last year (she is one of my local authors so I met her before her book came out) I knew I had to read it- and I did and absolutely adored it (you can read my review HERE). When I discovered she had a second historical fiction/romance coming out, there was no doubt I was going to read it. And I am happy to report that The Invention of Sophie Carter is just as adorable, engaging, and swoony as I hoped it would be. Basically, this was just plain fun for me to read.

“Can you say that you are whole and complete?"

 “No,” she said, pressing her hand to the center of her chest. “My life has been an empty canvas, and I thought I had to wait to find someone to paint my life into a masterpiece. But I was wrong. I am the painter and I am the only person who can make my life into a masterpiece. And I’m the only person who can make me whole and complete.”

I was swept away in the drama of the story and I am always a sucker for great family dynamics and you can;t beat the relationship between the sisters. I really appreciated that the story was narrated by both Sophie and Mariah and they had very distinct voices and personalities- and lets not forget to mention the ridiculous, wonderful twin shenanigans! I enjoyed watching both girls grow into the women they were meant to be, capable in their own ways and able to find love in two very charming, endearing men.

“I understand why you like to read— I prefer books to people, too. But I’m not a heroine in one of your novels. Love is not the answer to all of my problems.”

“You’d more likely be the villainess of the book.”

“I’d actually prefer that. They’re always more interesting than the saintly heroine,” Sophie said with a laugh and tugged at one of Mariah’s curls.

I know I am sounding like total fan girl, but I am proud to admit that I am! This is the perfect book choice for any one who likes historical fiction, very proper romance stories with just the right level of kisses, spunky heroines who help themselves, sisterly love, and the best kind of ending (or really beginnings).

Genre: Another-World, Historical, Romance, Royal-Court, Supernatural, Suspense--

What a super awkward love story! And that is what this is. An arranged marriage between two kingdoms that turned into a great, sweet romance- and there just happens to be a touch of action, danger and monsters. This is seriously like my favorite kind of historical romance novels- this one just so happens to have a monster to battle (and the sex scenes take place off the page even though you know they are happening) I don't even think I would call this YA, it very much felt like an adult novel due to the concept, it was just pretty pg and the characters were younger. I actually pretty much adore this book, just for your knowledge. I blew through the story in one day (I was up until 3am finishing the story, but that is basically the same day since I hadn't slept yet) since I had to know what happened and I was surprised to find I reached the end.

I can't remember reading a romance story (or really any book, to be honest) where there was a complete language barrier between the two characters. They do not share any words, or culture, have basically nothing in common, yet they are marriage at first sight and expected to make a go of it. It created so much conflict and uncertainty- but on the same hand, I loved how body language and tone came into play so much to help with intention. You could basically feel the frustration coming off Kalista at her lack of understanding, her desire to communicate freely, to understand what was going on around her. Yet, even with such a huge obstacle, a sweet love blossomed.

“You need to wear a bell,” I said.

His head cocked.

Right. 

Language. He spared a glance at his father, then drew me aside.

Strange time for advice, especially in a foreign language. 

“Kalista,” he said. I nodded and made my eyes wide to show I was paying attention. 

“Uh…” he said.

Sounds good. We should do that.

This story was just as much character driven as court intrigue/monster hunting driven. The author does a fantastic job developing her character, Kalista may be the only narrator, but there were so many fleshed out side characters that I appreciated. I really loved Emmett, the snarky assassin monk that is sent to be the interpreter/teacher for Kalista, who enjoyed his lessons through the trial and fail approach. He became the best friend needed in this scary situation and I loved the moments of levity that he brought to the dark story. Carson, the foreign prince turned husband was adorable- he approved of all Kalista was in his silent and steady way. As a side note, the villains in the story were so despicable and evil, they two were really well done and made me hate them.

“The staff thinks it’s good he found a wife.”

“Even if she’s foreign?”

“It doesn’t seem to bother them much. They say they like to see him happy.”

“That’s him happy?” 

Emmett laughed. “I told you that you make him nervous.”

“For the love of Aris, he hunts monsters.”

“I’ve had to deal with you for a few days. I get it.”

“You’re an ass.”

Overall this was a fantastic debut novel that I love and recommend to anyone who loves historical romances- with a little bit of monsters and curses on the side. I can't wait to see what the author creates next.

My Review:

3.5 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Heart-Wrenching, Historical, Mystery, Romance, Supernatural, Time-Travel--

Keep in mind that this is the third book in the series and I recommend reading them in order to attempt to keep things straight- which is hard to do when time travel and multiple timelines are in play. This book has it's own standalone romance but the world building is a continuation.

There was two different timelines/relationships going on in this story. First there is York and Izzy. York is out of his own time (his origins from a previous book), living in the modern world when he meets Izzy, a young woman who was thrust from the past into the modern time with no memories. The other relationship is with Kenzie, granddaughter to the inventor of the time travel device who goes back in time to help York on his quest to help Izzy- and inadvertently gets kidnapped by James. I loved their story, I rooted for them to find love regardless of the short interaction (but probably because I am a sucker for the enemy to lover trope (or kidnapper to lover??).

This is now the fourth book I have read by this author, in two different series and she is great at making the reader aware of the attraction between characters. BUT in every book she talks about the character loins/groin tingling (and occasional clenching) a lot (in all the books) to indicate that they are aroused/attracted to the love interest. I personally have never had tingling loins and I found it slightly off putting. There are so many ways to indicate attraction and lust, I think this is my least favorite. But that is just a personal preference and I might not have noticed or been bothered by it but I read two of her books back to back.

Overall this was another interesting romantic installment to the time travel series, this time having two relationships with HEA and a new setting of the Civil War area.

I listened to the audiobook, where there was only one narrator (with one voice so everyone sounded the same) even though there were multiple character views and timelines so I was occasionally confused as to who was talking or what was happening. I think I might have enjoyed this better if I had read it instead of listening.

Kristin “KJ” James was born and raised in the Nashville, TN area. Acting has always been a passion of hers.
