synopsis
Carlie McEwan loves many things. She loves being a witch. She loves her town of Halfway, NY - a tourist destination nestled on the shores of an Adirondack lake. Carlie loves her enormous familiar, Gus, who is 25 pounds of judgmental Maine Coon cat, and she positively worships her grandmother, a witch of incredible power and wisdom. Carlie spends her days cooking at the finest - and only - real diner in town, and her life is a balance between magic and the mundane, just as she likes it.

When a blond stranger sits at the diner counter and calls her by name, that balance is gone. Major Pickford asks Carlie to lead him into the deepest shadows of the forest to find a mythical circle of chestnut trees, thought lost to forever to mankind. There are ghosts in the forest, and one of them cries out to Carlie across the years. Come find me.

Danger, like the shadowed pools of the forest, can run deep. The danger is real, but Carlie's magic is born of a pure spirit. With the help of Gus, and Gran, and a rugged cop who really does want to save the world, she'll fight to bring a ghost home, and deliver justice to a murderer who hides in the cool, mysterious green of a forest gone mad with magic.

4 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Audiobook, Ghosts, Mystery, Scary, Supernatural, Witches, Zombies--

Carlie is a witch as well as a dang good chef at the local diner in her small town. She deals with whatever supernatural nasties come her way as well as crafting helping spells for those in need in secret (not to mention her delicious waffles). She considers herself a white witch and will do no harm. A stranger approaches her one day and asks for her assistance with what seems to be a simple trek through the woods. But after a little digging, Carlie realizes that her trek might be the kind that she won't come back from.

I was instantly interested in the book forever ago when I discovered the eye catching cover and learned the story was about a witch (woo paranormal). When I finally had the opportunity to get my hands on the book just recently, I jumped at the chance to listen to the story as an audiobook.

The narrator did a great job of creating specific voices for all the characters which is something that I usually struggle with in audiobooks since I can't see who is speaking. Each person had their distinctive "voice" or tone as well as a personality that helped me distinguish who was talking. My favorite part of Carlie is her attitude and the author brought it to life perfectly. The audio quality was nice, no issues at all while listening, and the narrator was engaging making me want to listen to more stories read by her.

This is my second book by this author and he seems to be very descriptive and at times verbose on certain topics, so much so it is as if he goes off on tangents that I don't (or lack interest) in following. Maybe I would be more engaged in the side story/history lesson/world building if I was reading the book, but I like audiobooks that are more engaging with plot and action, less overwhelming descriptions. Keeping my interest in an audiobook is almost a miracle because I am easily distracted, and the narrator did her best, but the plot at times left me bored during the first few chapters of world building. The story did pick up and I could not put it down, waiting to see what awful thing would come forward next. The creatures were hands down the most creative and creepy that I have encountered in a while.

Overall this was a very different type of paranormal witch read (listen?) for me and I liked the book. I look forward to whatever dangerous situation Carlie finds herself in the middle of next.

I received this title in return for my honest review.
