I had been wanting to read this story for so long because it sounded completely different and, because I am a cover snob, the cover is utterly gorgeous. I was excited to finally get the chance to jump into the story, liking all the mystery elements and creative world with all kinds of supernatural creatures, hierarchy and prophesy. The story was half about vampire/witch politics and the mystery of the main character's life and half about the drama of high school and first love.
The narrator did a good job of sounding like a teenage girl, full of angst and confusion about her life. She also was able to give voices to all the characters which I really appreciate when listening to an audiobook. I think the audiobook was well done and I would listen to this narrator again.
Overall this had some very interesting world building, making Kingdom of Embers completely different from any other vampire or witch story that I have read before. This was was able to mix teen drama/romance with paranormal issues and an underlying mystery.Keep in mind that this is the first book in a series so be ready to not have all your questions answered here. I personally had a difficult time connecting to the main character so it made the story harder for me to get into but I can see that others will really enjoy Kingdom of Embers. This is the perfect read for fans of YA paranormal romances such as Vampire Diaries and Twilight.
I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Tricia Copeland. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.
