Review: The Night Road: A Young Adult Dystopian Romance (Second City Series #1) by Katie French

Book Blurb:

A brand new Breeders Universe Story that will keep you up reading past your bedtime.

Five generations after Riley and Clay first set foot on Shiprock, the community is thriving. Liberated from the Breeders, the new society is free to live and love how they chose.

Eighteen-year-old Meg is Shiprock’s apprentice gunslinger and wise-cracking security guard, keeping the people safe as she patrols the stony cliffs. She can hit a target at fifty paces with her eyes closed, and yet, she’s never ventured outside the sheer cliffs of her home. It isn’t safe out there. Marauders still roam, snatching up unsuspecting victims.

Then a plague hits their peaceful city. Her sister, and only living family, falls ill.

People will die if a cure isn’t found.

Meg ventures out to find renowned doctor Fulton Tally and a cure to save her sister and the town.

But untold peril awaits. Will Meg’s training prove enough to survive the night road?

My Review:

4 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Audiobook, Dystopian, Heart-Wrenching, Survival, Suspense--

In a world that has gone completely to Hell, Meg just wants to do what is right and get taken seriously as a gunslinger and defender. When her fellow townspeople start falling ill, Meg is one of the few people not impacted and with the capabilities to do something about it. If she can survive her task and the dangerous world outside her walls...

I think a better name for this book would be "What Disaster Can Meg Get Into Next?" Seriously, the premise for this book was a girl trying to help out her town/sister and find a medication/cure/doctor and inadvertently finds herself in some crazy terrible situations- like being kidnapped (multiple times), cooked by cannibals, locked up after being shot by a crazy little girl, making friends with a goddess, playing dress up with dinosaur bones, being drugged at a bar, surviving an epic storm... basically everything you can imagine was thrown at this girl and she just kept going.

The one thing that drove me a little crazy about Meg was the fact she basically crushed on anything male that showed her a little positive attention. There were three guys who expressed possible interest in her and each time she was 100% into it. Maybe this is an end of the world attitude, take what you can get kind of thing, but I wanted her to be a little bit picker with her feelings. I hope the next book ends on a happy note with the one guy I always rooted for (even with the whole kidnapping thing).

This is actually a spinoff from another dystopian series which I now really want to read. I like the world the author created, it felt like this could really be our future, it was very realistic. Side note here- this is listed as YA but really it felt like an adult book with an older teen character, just with minimal sexual context but high on the danger and gore. I want to listen to the sequel and the original series now since the audiobook was well done. I recommend this for anyone who likes dystopian stories, action, adventure, danger and the possibility for romance.
