Blog Tour & Giveaway: Sons of Darkness: A Night Vigil Novel by Gail Z. Martin
Book Blurb:
Sons of Darkness
The Night Vigil (Book One) by Gail Z. Martin
Genre: dark urban fantasy
Publisher: SOL Publishing
Date of Publication: October, 2018
Number of pages: 278
A demon-hunting ex-priest teams up with a former FBI agent to solve a series of supernaturally-instigated deaths and disappearances.
We are the Night Vigil.
The run-down convenience store, the all-night diner, the last-ditch shelter, or seedy motel, the redneck bar and the emergency room, and all the other places open on the graveyard shift—they’re Hell’s hunting grounds, full of easy marks and desperate souls, prey for evil things out there in the dark.
We keep the Vigil, looking for the ones who can still be saved, the ones who aren’t too far gone. We’re the misfits and the muck-ups, unwanted by Heaven or Hell, given one last chance to atone for all the mistakes and missed chances, the pain we’ve caused others and ourselves, the good things we were afraid to do, and the bad things we embraced with open arms. We work the night shift because that’s when evil walks. We’re the clerk in the all-night liquor store, the server in the 24-hour diner, the long-haul trucker who only drives at night, the counter person in the convenience store, the dog shift nurse. We recognize the evil when we see it, and we use the skills we honed with blood and fire to stop it, whatever it takes.
Unfinished business ties us to the mortal world, to make atonement, find absolution, satisfy retribution, get things right. You won’t find a sorrier group of halfway house heroes. No illusions left—about ourselves, humanity, or what’s really out there in the darkness. Just a purpose, to go down fighting the good fight. Because this is our last chance.
One final chance to make it right, the thin red line of humanity against the evil that goes bump in the night, your best hope to make it through the hour of the wolf.
When a series of disappearances, suicides, and vengeful spirits cause havoc and death along a remote interstate highway, demon-hunting ex-priest Travis Dominick teams up with former special ops soldier and monster-hunter Brent Lawson to end the problem with extreme prejudice.

My Review:
4.5 Out Of 5 Stars
Genre: Heart-Wrenching, Mystery, Scary, Supernatural, Survival, Suspense, Urban Fantasy--
Travis has spent his life training for the task of eradicating the monsters that nobody knows really exist. As a former priest, he knows the truth about demons and darkness and will gladly spend his life to vanquish it. Brent had to learn the hard way that demons are real when his family was taken from him and then again while on a mission for the military. Armed with the truth, his need for vengeance, and a handful of well-informed contacts, Brent tracks the badies. When the two men's lives collide, they realize that it may be best to join forces since the current target is pure evil.
I have been eyeballing Gail's books for years, they really seem right up my urban fantasy alley. When I got the opportunity to read Sons of Darkness, the first in a new series about a couple of guys who hunt monster, the answer was Hell Yes! I had wonderful dreams that this would be a book version of my all time favorite show Supernatural, where two guys go on travels across the United States to rid the world of demons and the like. Well, that was kind of true- as I described this book to my mom, this was like a darker version of Supernatural. And yes, this was darker (no comedic relief here) just danger, scariness, angst and personal demons. Oh and if you like your books terrifying, startling, and suspenseful, then this is your next must read.
I enjoyed meeting the men that made the story and really getting to know them as well as their backstories and motivation. The guys are so similar in their desires but the paths to get to that point were very diverse. We have Travis who was a mild-mannered priest who ended up learning about the darker side of life and was recruited to the super elite, secret and scary order of monster hunting ninja priests (which totally makes me wonder if such a things exists...). And then there is Brent who basically grew up in the shadows of tragedy, saw death and destruction in war and then had demons thrust on him and had no idea how to go back and even try to pretend to be normal. Both are the Alpha of Alpha-est men and I like how a voice from beyond was finally the turning point for them to join forces- to be honest, I was counting down the pages until they teamed up- they were like their own intense form of (completely destructible) superheros. I rooted for both characters and the backstories helped to make them real- which is a feat in a crazy supernatural world
I really like the world that Gail created, with all kinds of supernaturals roaming around. Be it the truck driver who has a hidden gift of sight, the necromancer and his gift of death, the clairvoyant who communes with spirits, to the woman who missed her sister and through dark magic now shares a body with the deceased spirit. I look forward to seeing what connections and creatures will come forward next. Based on the ending of the book, this is just the beginning of the journey for Brent and Travis and the battle against evil and I plan to be there to watch it happen!
I am voluntarily reviewing an advance, complimentary copy of this book.

Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed the book! BTW, I’m a huge Supernatural fan! And if you want snarky monster hunters, check out the Spells Salt and Steel series I co-write with Larry N. Martin. It’s definitely more for laughs. The Deadly Curiosities series is somewhere between Spells and Sons. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the suggestion Gail, added it to my to-read list!
