Audiobook Review: Hunting in Bruges (Hunters' Guild #1) by E.J. Stevens

Book Blurb:

The only thing worse than being a Hunter in the fae-ridden city of Harborsmouth, is hunting vamps in Bruges.

Being shipped off to Belgium sucks. The medieval city of Bruges is quaint, but the local Hunters' Guild is understaffed, the canals are choked with dead bodies, and there's no shortage of supernatural predators as likely suspects.

On second thought, maybe Bruges isn't so bad after all.

With a desire to prove herself, protect the innocent, and advance within the ranks of the Hunters' Guild, Jenna Lehane hits the cobbled streets of Bruges with blades at the ready. Someone, or something, is murdering tourists and dumping their bodies in the city's scenic canals. With the help of a mysterious stranger, Jenna begins to piece together clues that are dotted throughout the city like blood spatter.

Determined to stop the killings, Jenna delves into a bloody local history that only raises more questions—but some secrets are best left buried. Jenna must put her combat training to the test as she struggles to unearth the truth about an ancient enemy.

Hunting in Bruges is the first novel in the Hunters' Guild urban fantasy series set in the world of Ivy Granger.

My Review:

3.5 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Mystery, Supernatural, Suspense, Urban Fantasy, Vampires, Witches--

I have been eyeballing the Ivy Granger series by this author for a while now so when I saw that there was a new series set in the same world but with a different character, I was excited to jump in. Since this was my first foray into this world, I had no idea what to expect but I found the world to be interesting. Jenna at times mentions Ivy and a little bit of hunter history that probably means something if you have read the previous series, but I did not feel like I was missing out on anything. This was a very fast paced, intense and action packed urban fantasy and I would love to read more in this series- and now I have the perfect motivation to pick up the Ivy series for real (I even already own them).

Jenna was so freaking blind- or naive! For such an intense super-hunter, she was so blind to the truth that was right in front of her. And yet, her discovery of the truth was a huge deal for the main character that was a big part of the plot. I knew the truth from the moment the character was introduced (which was almost the beginning of the book!) and was just waiting for Jenna to understand- and I had to wait almost the entire book for that moment. Sorry, rant over, but it did drive me insane. Overall I enjoyed Jenna and her determination, even if at times she was so oblivious!

I really enjoyed the narration technique used for the audiobook, it was the first time I have encountered that method before. The story was narrated by a female character and a female narrator was used to read the book. But then whenever a male character was in the book speaking, a male narrator was used for their voices. It made it seem more like a dialogue and I appreciated it. Both narrators had great enunciation and dialect and I enjoyed listening to the story.
