While coming home from school to spend time with her parents, Annabelle instead discovers them murdered with no answers as to why. She spends the next two years in an antidepressant stupor, just going through the motions of being alive but not caring about anything. After having her life saved by a random stranger, Annabelle puts her life into his hands again- all the while he has a huge bombshell to drop on her, one that will change everything she thought she knew. The fate of the world may depend of what Annabelle does next.
I thought the world that the author created was amazing, you could even call it magical (haha sorry I could not resist). When I started the book I actually thought this as a slightly dystopian/economy dropped earth, pretty recognizable- except with a few changes like shifters, elves, ogres and witches. Then I learned that this was an entirely new world called Elderan it became that much better. I loved the idea of the human King that started rumors and overthrew the magical government and the underground rebellion full of all kinds of creatures trying to take it back. Each little morsel I discovered about the world I just gobbled up, helping to create a well rounded background to the plot.
I will admit that I struggled to connect to Annabelle when the story started. Maybe it was done intentionally by the author since she was emotionally distant due to being in a medically induced haze? I am not sure, but it made it hard to root for her. I was interested in meeting the guys and the overall plot, but Annabelle was a little bit of a place filler for me. She did become more fleshed out and I was able to see her as a person more towards the end of the book.
This is the first in a slow burn reverse harem, where we get to meet the characters and watch them and the world develop before any sort of romance even starts, which is actually how I prefer it. I am interested to see Annabelle develop and the fight that is coming is sure to be epic.
