1. What was your favorite supernatural creature to write about or create?

The “titans” are the supernatural race I created for Midnight Ice and I had a TON of fun putting their mythology and powers together! The titans are a supernatural police force, and they have twelve different sectors of power—from hunters with enhanced strength, to mindbenders who can manipulate memories, to quakers who can shift the earth. They were inspired by ancient Greek mythology, with a little bit of the angel/demon lore thrown in. For example, the bolters, who have the power to create lightning, were inspired by Zeus, there’s a special reveal about the true meaning of Tartarus, and there’s a whole plotline about the myth my main character is named after—Pandora’s Box! I don’t want to say too much, because the slow unravel of the titan backstory provides a lot of the mystery surrounding this series, but you’ll see what I mean if you read the books!

2. Who do you fan girl over?

Leigh Bardugo and Laini Taylor are two of my absolute favorite authors right now! Six of Crows and Strange the Dreamer were two of the best books I’ve read in the past few years! And, of course, I’ll forever be a JK Rowling fan girl. Meeting her would be a highlight of my life!

3. What has been your favorite author moment so far?

Oh, this one is bittersweet but it is definitely the most memorable and most special author moment I’ve had. A fan of mine reached out a few years ago and explained to me that she was suffering from cancer, but that my books provided a relief while she was undergoing treatment. I was so moved by her words, I can’t even adequately explain how much they meant to me. I sent her a box of donations, some of my books and some of my favorite YA books, and she turned them into a little library at her local treatment center for other patients to enjoy. I was incredibly touched and I still am by her kindness!

4. If you could pick any kind of supernatural creature in your worlds to become, what would you pick?

Probably a conduit! They’re these totally badass vampire slayers who have the power to channel the sun through their bodies and spew fire to take vamps out. Very cool! My Midnight Fire series tells the story of a conduit girl discovering her abilities for the first time, and I’m in love with those characters and their story! 5. What are you currently reading?

I just started The Alchemists of Loom by Elise Kova, and it’s wonderful! Sort of a steampunk fantasy adventure that has totally got me hooked! The author also wrote a high fantasy series called Air Awakens that’s been on my TBR for ages, so I’ll probably dive into that next.

6. What is your current television obsession?

Ugh, too many. I’m a TV junkie! I watch far too many reality shows, from HGTV anything to all the Real Housewives franchises to game shows like Survivor. This Is Us is probably my favorite scripted show at the moment (it’s amazing if you haven’t started, total tearjerker but in the best way!). Oh, and duh, Game of Thrones is probably the best show I’ve ever seen on television! I’m obsessed!!

7. What are you working on next (if you can reveal any details)?

I just finished the rough draft for the fourth and final book in my Midnight Ice series, Shatter, so I’ll be hard at work polishing that up for publication! After that, I’ve got two secret projects up my sleeve :) This first is a YA high fantasy, which is a Tristan & Isolde retelling set in an avian-inspired world—super fun! And the second is my next pen name contemporary romance venture (written as Kay Marie!), which is a girl meets dog meets owner love fest!

8. If there was another author you could co-write with who would you pick?

Ooh, there are a ton of authors I would love to beta read or critique partner with, but I’ve never really been interested in co-writing! I’m definitely more of a solo-writer. I’m not sure if I’d be able to share my characters with someone else, I failed that class in elementary school :)

9. Did you always want to be a writer?

Always! There was a brief spell where I wanted to be a singer and another where I wanted to study marine biology, but writing has always been my true passion! I wrote my first book by taping together pieces of construction paper and drawing pictures with markers :) Pretty sure that gem is in my mother’s attic somewhere, as well as all the middle school poetry I truly hope never sees the light of day!

10. Which Harry Potter houses would Pandora, Sam, Jax, Naya, Kira and Luke be sorted into?

I’ll admit, I’m a sucker for a Gryffindor! Most of my main characters probably fall into that house, brave and daring—definitely Pandora and Kira, and probably Jax too! Sam would 100% be a Slytherin :) Luke would be a Hufflepuff and Naya would probably be a Ravenclaw!
