"In this richly imagined start to a new sci-fi series, Reed brings optimism to the goal of solving entrenched violence in a galaxy far, far away . . . A propulsive, sharply crafted tale about a planetary war." -Kirkus Reviews

Author's Playlist for When Planets Fall-
I have a love/hate relationship with music. I love to create it—I grew up playing multiple instruments, and I really enjoy using programs to compose. Most of the time, I’m drawn in so much I lose track of what I’m doing and my power to multi-task dies. If anything involves more brain power than cutting vegetables…psshhht. Music off.
However, when I’m drafting a novel or settling into a day of editing, I need to get into my characters’ brain. This is when I pull out the playlists. Listening to the music helps me focus on what my character is feeling, the images the song creates for their storyline, and I can more easily put on their skin.
Since I’m not listening continuously while I write, my playlists aren’t super long, but I do have key songs for the book series and each character!
For the whole of WHEN PLANETS FALL (and the Stars Fall Circle in its entirely), I listen and re-listen and re-listen to Theme from Defiance by Bear McCreary. I love the mashup of strings and electronic sounds. The bigness, the emotion—totally clicks with how I picture this world. I listen to this song before I jump into each individual character’s playlist to help center me to the series.
Breaker’s theme is The Maze Runner by John Paesano and Conviction (Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Conviction) by Kaveh Cohen. There’s something about both of them that capture his dreaming spirit and his world spiraling out of his control.
Malani’s theme is Black Heart from BruhnuhVille and This Close by Flyleaf. She sees the world as beautiful, but her insides are slowly twisting and fracturing. I love how Black Heart captures that and the fragment of innocence she carries. This Close is a small picture of her feelings toward Breaker.
Luka’s theme is I’m Still Here by John Rzeznik and Flirting with Disaster by Young Beautiful in a Hurry. Disaster captures how he sees himself, but Here shows where his heart truly is. And I like playing the two after each other to get that dichotomy.
Hope you enjoy the music!
