My Review:

5 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Another-World, Heart-Wrenching, Mystery, Scary, Supernatural, Survival, Suspense, Teen, Urban Fantasy, Vampires--

Picking up just moments after book 1, Not Even Bones, ends, Nita is faced with her betrayer, the boy she helped escape who in turn sold her to the black market to be potentially eaten piece by piece for her powers. Nita realizes that her life will never be what it once was since her identity was broadcast to the world and she needs to make choices as to how to go on. With her family destroyed, her loyalties questioned and everything uncertain, Nita knows that she will do whatever she can to stay alive- even if that means partnering with a monster.

She'd been in Toronto less than a day and with Kovit less than an hour before she'd been involved in a murder.

And she hadn't even had a chance to dissect the body.

No, we aren't suppose to think like that.

Why not? He was evil. We didn't know him. Why shouldn't we want to dissect him?

Because...well, actually, yeah.

Just an FYI, this series is not for everyone. It was dark, messed up and at times super disturbing (dealing with murder and torture- and occasionally people cut off other's body parts and eat them, so yeah, dark), but also it is also fantastic, unique, compelling and crazy. And I am here for every moment of this story! The best way to describe the Market of Monsters series would be a female version of Dexter meets YA paranormal. I blew through Not Even Bones, so enamored with this terrible exciting world that Rebecca created and I had no idea how Only Ashes Remain could live up to the high expectations that book one set. But this was just as good, with a different side to this dark world exposed, full of scary creatures such as vampires, kelpies, unicorns (men who devour the souls of virgins) and zannies (creatures that eat pain)- and the mafia and corrupt police to reign it all in.

Nita is having a moral dilemma in Only Ashes Remain, her view of who she thought she was as a person at the beginning of Not Even Bones has completely gone out the window and she is reassessing (in the way that only a sociopath can). She assumed she had boundaries, lines she would never cross in her safe bubble of dissecting bodies that were already dead, but all of a sudden she realizes that she is capable of murder and wanting other's dead. Who she thought she was does not exist and Nita spends the book trying to assemble the pieces together to create a new version of herself and new boundaries. I found it great that the person who spoke to her about morality and boundaries was a zannie- a creature seen only as a deadly monster (who I absolutely loved!). On a side note, these are the most morally gray characters that you have ever seen, yet I loved them, rooted for them and empathized with them. I have no idea how Rebecca made me love these at times deadly ruthless killers, but she did.

I will attempt to patiently wait for the next book in the series but I am not sure if I can. This was a thrilling read, full of danger, action, betrayal, surprise and murder and I want more. I highly recommend reading book 1 and 2 back to back since it was the same storyline, only moments later and you will not want to wait to continue. I am not certain what book I can even compare this too, but if you like dark, deadly and morally gray then you just found your next read.

Book Blurb:

Dexter meets This Savage Song in this dark fantasy about a girl who sells magical body parts on the black market — until she’s betrayed.

Nita doesn’t murder supernatural beings and sell their body parts on the internet—her mother does that. Nita just dissects the bodies after they’ve been “acquired.” But when her mom brings home a live specimen, Nita decides she wants out — dissecting living people is a step too far.

But when she tries to save her mother’s victim, she ends up sold on the black market in his place — because Nita herself is a supernatural being. Now Nita is on the other side of the bars, and there is no line she won’t cross to escape and make sure no one can ever capture her again.

Nita did a good deed, and it cost her everything. Now she’s going to do a lot of bad deeds to get it all back.
