Book Blurb:

When Summer Ends by Jessica Pennington

Release Date: April 9, 2019

Published by: Tor Teen/Macmillan

Aiden Emerson is an all-star pitcher and the all-around golden boy of Riverton. Or at least he was, before he quit the team the last day of junior year without any explanation. How could he tell people he's losing his vision at seventeen?

Straight-laced Olivia thought she had life all figured out. But when her dream internship falls apart, her estranged mother comes back into her life, and her long-time boyfriend ghosts her right before summer break, she's starting to think fate has a weird sense of humor.

Each struggling to find a new direction, Aiden and Olivia decide to live summer by chance. Every fleeting adventure and stolen kiss is as fragile as a coin flip in this heartfelt journey to love and self-discovery from the author of Love Songs & Other Lies.

My Review:

5 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Romance, Teen--

Olivia finally got what she wanted, to date her best friend and be part of the family she has always loved. But when her aunt tells her that they are going to move at the end of the summer, her boyfriend breaks up with her and her dream job falls through, Olivia has no idea what to do. Aiden thought his life was figured out too, that was until a few months ago when he discovered that he was loosing his eye sight. Quitting the baseball team at the end of the season without telling why has made him a pariah, but Aiden figures now is the perfect time to figure out himself and what else he loves. When Aiden and Olivia are forced to work together, fate and chance may take them down a completely new path.

Jessica's debut book, Love Songs and Other Lies is one of my favorite books I read last year, full of angst, turmoil and heart, and overall Jessica really set the bar high with my expectations of what would come next. I follow Jessica on social media and I would read occasionally about her struggles writing her second book and I can honestly say after reading this story that there is no struggle that transferred into the pages. When Summer Ends was exactly what I wanted it to be, basically a breath of fresh air that I could not stop wanting more of. I have read multiple YA contemporaries recently that claimed to be cute summer romances that fell flat for many reasons, but this was just about perfect (for me, and I am sure everyone else looking for the cutest summer read.).

I love character driven stories, where you connect and root for the people on the pages regardless of the plot or world. When Summer Ends is the perfect example of a character driven book, with alternating POV from both Aiden and Olivia. Let me just take a minute to gush about Aiden- he really was adorable. He was sweet, kind, driven, artistic, cute and the best boyfriend he could be, even when he was unaware of his romantic entanglements. But not only was he great boyfriend potential, but he was the best kind of friend Olivia needed. He had some big personal issues going on but really never took it out on others and made the best of every situation. It made sense why Olivia unknowingly fell for him, I was half in love with right from the start. I buddy read this with my good friend Sarah at The Clever Reader and we kept texting randomly back and forth throughout the book about how much we loved Aiden, so be aware you might suffer from a crush here. Olivia was more closed off when the story started, heart broken in every way and just trying to get by. I love how she threw out her strict rules and regulations to live the summer by chance. She took a big chance and it turned out wonderfully and I am glad I got to experience that with her.

In case you were uncertain, I loved this book. It was full of humor, personal growth, great friendships, the best characters and some super swoony stolen moments. I highly recommend you pick up this book and get ready to jump into summer...and love.

Author Bio:

Jessica Pennington is no stranger to the combination of love and drama. She’s a wedding planner, after all. A writer since the age of ten—when she sought publication for her poem about a tree—Jessica likes the challenge of finding the humor in a sad situation or highlighting the awkwardness in a romantic one. A serial entrepreneur with a B.A. in public relations, Jessica has a passion for grassroots marketing. She lives in a Michigan beach town, where she owns more YA novels than many teens and spends most of her time on a laptop, rather than on a beach.
