The Devil’s Own
K.A. Fox
Published by: Acorn Publishing
Publication date: April 20th 2019
Genres: Urban Fantasy, Young Adult

Delaney Murphy has always known she’s the Devil’s daughter. And although the title itself is a burden, she never expects to inherit all her father’s infernal abilities. When her newfound magic begins to poison the people closest to her, Laney must make a choice. To protect the world from the worst she can do, she leaves everyone she loves behind and builds a new life for herself, alone, in a place where she can control the urge to give in to the magic living within her.

But when she recognizes a familiar pattern in a string of murders, Laney leaves her peaceful, isolated life behind and goes on the hunt, unleashing a threat she never dreamed possible. Confronting this menacing specter could mean giving in to temptation and becoming the one thing she fears most. Will she use her magic to do the right thing, even if it means hurting the ones she loves?

My Review:

5 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Another-World, Mystery, Royal-Court, Scary, Supernatural, Suspense, Urban Fantasy--

Delaney has been living off the grid for years after an unfortunate accident revealed her manifested powers. Delaney is the daughter of the devil, making her able to control, manipulate and feed off the humans around her- a curse Delaney wants nothing to do with. Now she uses her skills to hunt down demons preying on the weak. But when her hunt goes wrong, almost costing her her life, her father- the Devil- makes her accept assistance. But that is not the end of Delaney's problems, something is coming for her.

This was such a fantastic book! I will admit that the synopsis sounded really good when I first read it, but when I saw the cover I was sold. I am such a cover snob and The Devil's Own just looked so cool, with this bad-ass girl staring you down, just waiting for a challenge- yep, it was a guarantee I was going to read this book. Urban Fantasy will always be my favorite genre and I am always on the lookout for new authors and world to escape into so I was very interested to see what K.A. could write.

I want a Moose! Where can I get my hands on a super cool Hell Hound that can shift shape and communicate and overall be a really efficient protector? I know he was not actually a main character (...or maybe he doesn't even count as a character as all as a dog like creature...), but he was my favorite. Don't get me wrong, all the characters were so well developed and different, with flaws and quirks that endeared me to them- but I am a dog person, enough said.

The book was narrated by Delaney, but it was such a great ensemble cast. I enjoyed Delaney and her independence and internal strength, Cam and his charm and easy going attitude added a calming presence, and then Torren and his uncontrollable intensity and ethics added a layer of angst and anger, just the right touch the book needed. And that is not even mentioning Angus and his questionable motives/desires, and the townspeople who seem to know things...

When the book ended I was just so devastated! I need more of this world and the characters, I am so intrigued by what K.A. has started and I have so many questions and concerns about what will happen next. In case it was not clear, I very much enjoyed this story, blowing through it in less than a day because I could not put it down in case I might miss something exciting/dangerous/awesome. This series will go on my insta-buy list for when the next book is released.

I reviewed a complimentary copy of this title.
