My Review:

3.5 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Another-World, Ghosts, Mystery, Supernatural, Suspense--

Brenna is excited to get away to college where she has a chance to be someone new, not the odd girl who died that she was known as in high school. But what nobody knows is that ever since she died and came back to life, Brenna does not dream- instead when she sleeps her spirit leaves her body and experiences a different realm she calls the Fade, where ghost, demons and fairies live. When a boy actually sees her outside her body, Brenna realizes that there is a lot about this supernatural realm she doe snot know- but it seems she needs to figure it out quick.

I actually assumed when I first picked up A Dream Is To Die that it would be an urban fantasy adventure kinda story, but in actuality I would call this more a paranormal mystery. I think the idea of astral projection is really interesting, and that is what our main character can do (even though it is never called that) after she died from an accident years before. When she leaves her body, she can see other kinds of creatures including ghosts and doorways to other worlds that don't exist in out plane. It was a really interesting concept and makes me curious.

Brenna is a very prickly character, always saying her blunt version of the truth, not really interested in making friends, and lacking almost all social skills. I liked that she kept everything real (minus her hiding her secret life, but whatever) and you always knew her mind and where others stood with her. But while she was prickly, she also was kind and took care of those in need- even if the need was self inflicted binge drinking. She was a multifaceted character that at times I wondered what she was going to do next- especially in regards to the supernatural stuff.

There was plenty of twists, turns, surprises and drama to keep me reading, mixing the paranormal, mystery and angsty college stuff together to create a very different kind of book. Based on the questions left at the ending though, I would say that this is the first book in a series, and I can't even imagine where the next book will take Brenna and her friends.

I reviewed a complimentary copy of this title.
