Return to the series BuzzFeed compared to Ready Player One in the second book in a new fast-paced trilogy from New York Times bestselling authors Jason Segel and Kirsten Miller that's perfect for fans of HBO's Westworld.

Simon saved his best friend, Kat, from the clutches of the Company and their high-tech VR gaming experience, Otherworld. But it was at a steep price. Now he, Kat, and their friend Busara are on the run. They know too much. About the Company's dark secrets. About the real-life consequences of playing Otherworld. And about Kat's stepfather's involvement in everything. The group is headed to New Mexico to find Simon's old roommate, who is a tech genius and possibly the only person who can help them reveal the truth about the Company before it's too late and the line between what's real and what's fantasy is erased... forever.

Imagine a future in which you can leave reality behind and give in to your greatest desires. That future is now. And the future is terrifying.

My Review:

5 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Another-World, Mystery, Survival, Suspense, Teen--

Picking up just hours after the end of Otherworld, Simon and Kat are out of Otherworld but their battle is just beginning. Teaming up with Busara, who Simon does not fully trust, and seeking out his computer genius friend Elvis, Simon is about to take on The Company- whether he wants to or not.

What a crazy ride! And now I have to wait a year until the next book after the shock at the last page. I really enjoyed book 1 Otherworld, loving the created world that the books was predominantly set in full of danger, strange creatures, magic, indulgence, and self discovery. I was a little sad when I realized Otherearth would not be really in Otherworld, but once I started reading, I was not disappointed.

I loved Simon. He is such a normal guy, maybe one who is slightly less ambitions than most teen boys, but boy did he step up. What once started as a selfish trip to save the girl he loved turned into a battle for his life and the lives of so many others. Add in the fact that Simon is suffering from side effects from his time spent in the virtual world- side effects that he can't always tell are fake or not. It was interesting seeing Simon hallucinate and battle whether it was real or not- the talks with his Grandfather were the best (which makes me wonder about Simon's psyche, but whatever!)I am completely on team Simon and his quest for the underdogs.

I listened to the audiobook for Otherworld and was at least 25% in before I realized that the narrator's voice sounded very familiar. Well, the series is narrated by one of the authors, Jason Segel, who just so happens to be the actor Jason Segel. Yeah, I had no idea so color me surprised when I discovered this tidbit while in the middle of listening to the book. I highly recommend listening to the series, or at least the first book because Jason does all different character voices perfectly and main character Simon feels so real, with personality and snark. Seriously, you can see the acting skills pay off when Jason was able to bring all he characters to life. After listening to Otherworld, I heard Jason's voice in my head for Simon while reading the physical copy of Otherearth.

I really enjoyed this book as well as the series in general and think this is the perfect read for anyone who enjoyed Warcross or Ready Player One. Go take a trip to Otherworld, but be careful- you may not want to leave.

About Jason:

New York Times bestselling author Jason Segel used to have nightmares just like Charlie, and just like Charlie, he's learned that the things we're most afraid of are the things that can make us strong...if we're brave enough to face them. Jason likes acting, writing, making music, and hanging out with his friends. Sometimes he writes movies. Sometimes he writes songs for movies. Sometimes he stars in those movies and sings those songs. You might know him from The Muppets and Despicable Me. Your parents might know him from other stuff. Nightmares! is his first novel.

About Kirsten:

I write books.

Some of my books are what librarians call middle grade. (Kiki Strike, Nightmares!)

Some should be kept away from small children and people with weak stomachs. (How to Lead a Life of Crime, The Eternal Ones, Otherworld)

I write some books with Jason Segel.

I've written quite a few books on my own.

I'm an Aquarius.

My favorite food is cauliflower. (No joke.)

I will eat almost anything. And I'm weirdly proud of it.

I believe New York City is the most magical place on earth.

I love Dolly Parton and David Attenborough. Equally.

I cannot sing or play any musical instruments.

I'm obsessed with sewers and sanitation systems.

I once broke into a Mayan temple with my brother, Spike.

Spike is an alias. It's not his real name.

I also have a sister. She prefers to remain anonymous.

We have the same birthday.

Yes, that sucks.

I think that's all you need to know.
