Review: The Exchange by M.F. Lorson

Book Blurb:

He came forward in time.

She changed his world.

What happens if he doesn't want to go back?

Ari hates the Institute and everything it stands for. But to save her father's job, she's agreed to help host a time traveling exchange student. She only has to behave for 3 months while he's here, then off he goes back to 1903 where he came from. Easy peasy, right? There’s just one problem. The more time Ari spends with James the harder she falls for him.

James is eager to leave behind his hard life as a farmer to escape to 2030 where he may actually have a future. His term at the Institute is three months, but he has zero plans of returning home ever again. In order to make sure that doesn't happen, though, he needs an ally. Could his reluctant host, Ari, be the one to break the rules?

Fans of Ruby Red and The Here and Now will swoon for a love that spans the decades.

My Review:

4 Out Of 5 Hearts

Genre: Another-World, Historical, Mystery, Romance, Supernatural, Teen, Time-Travel--

James is excited to have been selected for The Exchange, a program that will send him, a simple farmer from 1903 to experience three months in the future to educate people about the past. But James has a secret- he does not want to return to the past. Ari hates the exchange and the fact her father is so devoted to the program, so much so that she attempts to sabotage it at every turn. When her last act of rebellion gets her caught, she has an ultimatum: play nice and become a guide for the next round of exchanges or her father will lose his job.

I am always down for time travel books, I find the concept interesting and I love seeing how different authors approach the topic. I can honestly say that this was a 100% unique plot, making the time travel really feel real and like it could legitimately be a practice to learn more about certain events in history. I also like how this was set just slightly in the future, so the world was recognizable but the advancement of the time traveling technology made perfect sense.

This story was just as much about the character development and the mystery as it was about the time travel which helped to balance out the book. The story was predominantly told from Ari and James' point of view but with Michael and Elizabeth thrown in for a little variety and perspective. Also, the mystery took a sinister unexpected turn I fully support. I found the pacing to be really nice and this was overall an interesting fast read. The ending felt like there could be more and I would love if there was a follow up story because I have so many questions! I hope to see a sequel to come.
