Thais Fenwick was eleven-years-old when civilization fell, devastated by a virus that killed off the majority of the world’s population. For seven years, Thais and her family lived in a community of survivors deep in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. But when her town is attacked by raiders, she and her blind sister are taken away to the East-Central Territory where she is destined to live the cruel and unjust kind of life her late mother warned her about.

Atticus Hunt is a troubled soldier in Lexington City who has spent the past seven years trying to conform to the vicious nature of men in a post-apocalyptic society. He knows that in order to survive, he must abandon his morals and his conscience and become like those he is surrounded by. But when he meets Thais, morals and conscience win out over conformity, and he risks his rank and his life to help her. They escape the city and set out together on a long and perilous journey to find safety in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Struggling to survive in a world without electricity, food, shelter, and clean water, Atticus and Thais shed their fear of growing too close, and they fall hopelessly in love. But can love survive in such dark times, or is it fated to die with them?

My Review:

4 Out of 5 Stars

Genre: Dystopian, Heart-Wrenching, Romance, Survival, Suspense--

Thais has been fairly sheltered from the harsh truths of their world since the sickness came and wiped most people out. She lives with her father and older disabled sister, having a simple but content life. When her father hears a noise and forces Thais and her sister to run, she knows her life as she knew it was over. Atticus does as he is told, even when his moral compass is screaming at him that the choices he makes are wrong, but survial means everything. He has been given a position of power in his town, and with that position comes terrible responsibilities and expectations. When Thais is dragged to Atticus' town, he has to make a hard choice to make.

I read a LOT of dystopian books, it is usually my go to genre because I love all the creative ways that authors come up with how the world ends. When I saw that there was a dystopian by Jessica Redmerski, I was really interested in how this would play out- I have been wanting to read her angsty New Adult books (The Edge of Never, I am looking at you here!) for forever so the fact she writes different genres made me intrigued. I wanted to see how the world ended written by an author who has mastered emotional relationships and romance (and I think this is the prettiest cover I have ever seen on a dystopian book!).

I had no idea how long this book was, according to my ereader it was well over 600 pages, making this the longest book I have read in a pretty long time (close second was like 500 pages). Let me tell you, I had no idea how long this book was when I decided to pick it up! And this is just the first book in a series, so I can only imagine how much more is to come. I was pleasantly surprised at how the story was able to keep my attention the whole book, grabbing me from the first page and then keeping my attention right until the last heartbreaking moment. Jessica was able to create a plot that was fast paced and engaging.

This was a really hard read for me due to the heavy dose of hard topics such as rape and abuse- to be perfectly honest I usually avoid anything that has those topics in general. There was a lot of talk as well as the act itself of rape peppered through the pages right from the start of the story. Also women were sorted into their assumed usefulness- worker, wife, prostitute- they were forced into a role whether they wanted to or not, which was another example the harsh realities that this book used. On one hand I respected the dose of reality that could easily be society after such a traumatic event, very much the misuse of power and the redevelopment of the world. On a positive, the romance was so perfectly executed! I loved meeting and growing to know both characters and then watching them develop a relationship. It was the sweetness I needed in the world of horror of the human making.

The ending was not the end, but instead a hint of what will come in a next book. Yep, this is the first in a series so make sure to keep an eye out for the next book Winds of the Iron Feather to see what will become of the characters next- and not every one will survive...

I reviewed a complimentary copy of this title.
