I recently had the opportunity to interview author Christina Bauer as part of the launch tour for her new book, CRADLED (the Beholder series epilogue.) Here’s what she had to say…
1. You are one of my favorite audiobook narrators- what made you want to narrate your own books? And would you be willing to narrate other's books? Did you have any formal theater/voice training? Did you have anyone else read your books or were you always set on bringing them to life?
To begin with, I’m thrilled that you like my audiobook narration!
My interest in audiobooks began when I was a kid. Growing up, I was obsessed with listening to old radio shows and really enjoyed how they created such detailed worlds without anything but sound. In college, I went on to do my master’s thesis on audio production at Syracuse University, where I also became a licensed disc jockey for the local jazz radio station. Plus I was a theater kid in grade school and high school, so performing was always something I enjoyed. I guess it was inevitable for me to do my own audiobooks, but there was a singular event that got me inspired.
When writing my books, I always read them out loud and do the voices. One day, I was writing in Starbucks and doing the voice of an Angelbound character named Sharkie, who is a big bad. The voice scared some guy so much, he dropped his latte! That’s when I thought, hey, maybe I can do this in a studio and people will take it seriously. I mean, I scared that guy half to death, right?
And so it began. I considered having a younger talent read my stuff, but the idea started making me nuts because I have very particular ideas about how each character should sound and the intonations. That left me working with me, and it’s turned out okay so far!
To answer your question about reading books by other authors, I would certainly consider it. That said, recording narration is a time consuming process, especially the way I do it with all the voices, so it’s hard to imagine having the extra cycles for books outside my own.
2. What was your favorite series to write?
Damn, they are all fun—and a major pain in the ass—in different ways. On the not-so-fun side, Beholder is an extremely emotional series for me to write. I always have trouble sleeping when I’m doing a Beholder book, even a light one like CRADLED. On the other hand, Angelbound is a blast to create. That said, in the beginning I ended up tossing nine Angelbound chapters for every one that I kept, so the series began as being really time intensive for me. That’s cleared up a lot now; I’ve written a lot more books and have refined my process. All in all, I’d have to say that Angelbound is still my favorite these days.
3. Will all of your series have crossover at some point?
***Spoiler alert***
There is some crossover in CRADLED between the Angelbound and Beholder worlds. That turned out to be a ton of fun to write…and hopefully folks will find it great to read as well! Assuming no one overly loathes Myla and Lincoln in CRADLED, then I already have some more crossover plans in mind. Beholder has this gateway system that is sort of supernatural duct tape to any other series. It’s a blast pairing these disparate characters together and finding out what they do!
4. What is your favorite genre to read?
Anything fantasy + romance. I’m talking space fantasy, elves, superpowers, you name it. If I’m taking a break from the world, I want to go ALL IN.
5. Current tv/movie obsession?
I go to the movies every week and I love anything with lots of fantasy there as well. Most recently, I thought the Star Wars SOLO movie was really well done. It wasn’t a box office smash, but it deserved to be one IMHO.
6. If you were not a writer what would be your dream job?
Billionaire playgirl.
7. I love that your book characters go on tour with you- who would you like to bring to an event next?
True story: I’ve been researching how I can get a Myla suit (main character from Angelbound) made with a believable moving tail so she can join me at signings. That would be so fucking cool, I can’t stand it!!! One of my readers is making a Myla action doll, so that will have to do until technology catches up with my special effects vision-slash-budget.
8. If you could meet any famous person (alive or dead) for dinner who would it be and where would you take them?
I think a young Orson Welles would be a fabulous dude to take out to dinner, preferably to 21 in New York. Welles did some of the greatest radio plays in the history of ever, including War of the Worlds. Would love to just listen to the guy pontificate (which is very different from mansplaining, BTW)
9. Which of your female main characters is your favorite?
Lately, I’ve been anxious to get started on writing Zinnia, which is Book 3 in my Angelbound Origins series and due out in Fall 2019. She’s this sort of wild woman who has lived alone in the desert all her life and finally starts interacting with humans. It’s going to be super fun to see the modern world through her eyes.
10. Are your characters based on real people you know?
Oh hell to the yes! The character of Cissy is based on my best friend. It’s funny when people comment on how I gave Cissy a valley girl accent in studio, because my bestie grew up on LA’s Rodeo Drive and yes, does have a bit of that tonality.
In terms of big bads, I’ve had a string of crap bosses at my day job lately, so I’ve been using their awfulness for inspiration. It’s a really great way to blow off some steam, and if any of them have caught on yet, they haven’t shown it. Extra bonus!
In all seriousness, thanks for this opportunity to share about my life and work. I really appreciate it!
