Getting to Eden brought Emmett and his crewmates one step closer to their promised fortune. But surviving Eden may be the biggest reward of all. Discover book two in the trilogy Marie Lu called, “a high-octance thriller.”

Emmett Atwater thought Babel’s game sounded easy. Get points. Get paid. Go home. But it didn’t take long for him to learn that Babel’s competition was full of broken promises, none darker or more damaging than the last one.

Now Emmett and the rest of the Genesis survivors must rally and forge their own path through a new world. Their mission from Babel is simple: extract nyxia, the most valuable material in the universe, and play nice with the indigenous Adamite population.

But Emmett and the others quickly realize they are caught between two powerful forces—Babel and the Adamites—with clashing desires. Will the Genesis team make it out alive before it’s too late?

My Review:

4.5 Out of 5 Stars

Genre: Aliens, Another-World, Dystopian, Mystery, Space, Survival, Suspense, Teen--

Emmett made it through the competitions to be selected for the Eden mission, but his challenges are just starting. After learning some harsh truths about the Babel corporation that set everything in motion, as well as the fate of his friends, Emmett feels even more broken. But with new alliances and some known enemies, Emmett will do whatever he can to survive and discover the truth of Nyxia, Babel and Eden. But not everyone can survive...

I think I liked Nyxia Unleashed even better than the first book because I never knew what to expect! Every page and encounter held something new and potentially dangerous to battle, be it creatures on Eden, enemies among "friends", betrayals, to dangerous jobs. I never knew what would happen next and it kept me on my toes, making me just as anxious as Emmett was. The first book, Nyxia, helped create the futuristic world and set up what was to come, but Nyxia Unleashed completely destroyed what we thought we knew and instead it was a whole new world and game- if it ever was a game.

Can I just mention that Scott totally ripped apart any and all good will and hope that I felt at the end of book 1 within the first chapter of book 2? In case you needed more reassurance, this is not your happy bedtime story with unicorns and - unless your bedtime stories are the original Grimm tales full of death and horror, then yep you are on the right place. This series is like the best mix of the violence and competition of death reminiscent of The Hunger Games, the space politics and self discovery of Ender's Game and classic sci-fi space exploration with new technology and the most amazing of world building. The world that Scott created on Eden is fantastic and deadly, with new creatures and the most thought out of situations and dynamics. Hands down, this was the most complicated, dark, compelling book I have read recently that makes you questions everything as well as what is right and what is allowed when survival is on the line.

Emmett is a great character that I completely root for. He is by no means perfect, but instead a real person, with a past and flaws and all. He experiences self-doubt as well as anger and hurt, but through his family and his friends he knows he can make the best decisions and stay true to himself (or the himself he wants to be). In Nyxia we watch him grow from a boy into a man, learn leadership and how to forgive, making him pretty much unstoppable (at least to me, but whatever Babel). In Nyxia Unleashed, we watch him in a new light of romance which added another facet to his personality- but he is also a force to be reckoned with and that makes him dangerous. As a side note, there were a few chapters narrated by a pretty unknown character Anton, which I found interesting and I now need to know more (and maybe what makes all the kids tick!)

And yet again, the ending just ripped the floor right out from underneath me! I thought I knew what was happening, had a firm grasp on the future for Emmett and now I know nothing. This series has the most shocking of conclusions, making you count down the days until the next book is released- but it is totally worth it. I highly recommend this series for any one who likes dystopian, sci-fi, danger, and twists- make sure to start at the beginning so you don't miss out on a single stress filled intense moment.

Emmett Atwater isn’t just leaving Detroit; he’s leaving Earth. Why the Babel Corporation recruited him is a mystery, but the number of zeroes on their contract has him boarding their lightship and hoping to return to Earth with enough money to take care of his family.

Forever.

Before long, Emmett discovers that he is one of ten recruits, all of whom have troubled pasts and are a long way from home. Now each recruit must earn the right to travel down to the planet of Eden—a planet that Babel has kept hidden—where they will mine a substance called Nyxia that has quietly become the most valuable material in the universe.

But Babel’s ship is full of secrets. And Emmett will face the ultimate choice: win the fortune at any cost, or find a way to fight that won’t forever compromise what it means to be human.

Author Bio:

Scott Reintgen was always a back-row dreamer. As early as kindergarten, teachers noticed his tendency to stare out of classroom windows and disappear to more interesting elsewheres. In high school, he began laboring away on the opening chapter of his first fantasy novel. One of his favorite English teachers agreed to read the pages and the very next day she switched him (illegally) out of Spanish and into a Creative Writing class. The story got tossed eventually, but he never lost the confidence he was given by that single act of empowering faith.

Convinced he would one day be a writer, Scott spent most of college and graduate school investing in the world of literature. This eventually led to a career teaching English and Creative Writing in North Carolina. He strongly believes that every student who steps into his classroom has the right to see themselves, vibrant and victorious and on the page. It’s his hope to encourage a future full of diverse writers. As he’s fond of reminding his students, “You have a story to tell and you’re the only one who can tell it.”

As for his own writing, Scott continues to follow in the footsteps of his favorite authors. It was Tolkien who once wrote, “The fairy gold (too often) turns to withered leaves when it is brought away. All I can ask is that you, knowing all these things, will receive my withered leaves, as a token at least that my hand once held a little of the gold.” And Scott hopes his books are a trail of withered leaves that might lead readers to the bright elsewheres through which he constantly finds himself wandering.

He currently lives in North Carolina with his wife, Katie, and family.
