“There are only two ways to survive Internet infamy: drop offline and play dead or give everyone something bigger and better to talk about. I’ve tried the first strategy. Now it’s time to try the second…”

A year and a lifetime ago, Riley Ozaki was just an ordinary high school junior in SanFrancisco, stressing over boys and grades. But an ill-conceived editorial in her school paper brought her an internet avalanche of public-shaming and ruined her life.

Now Riley’s on a helicopter dropping into a deserted island with nineteen other teens, to star in a reality show that will be her redemption. She has no other choice. National attention was what got her into this mess, and only the same level of exposure can get her out. Besides, Riley has a few tricks up her sleeve.

With a cast of vivid characters who will stop at nothing to win the show, a cursed island setting, and a priceless treasure waiting to be discovered, Reality Gold will drop readers right into a scheming web of lies, love, and betrayal.

“I call a top bunk!” Maddie called out, running to the far set of beds and climbing on the top.

“She’s so cute,” Willa said, in a sweetish tone that was hard to pin down as condescending but was probably meant to be. “And so is this! I never went to summer camp, so now it’s my chance. Just us girls, playing with each other’s hair and having pillow fights every night.”

“Yeah, I’m a no on the hair thing,” Maren said. I wasn’t surprised to see she was the first one at the duffel bags. She was already going through her own.

“Hey,” she said to Deb. “You guys took my Dropkick Murphys T-shirt. If my Gov Ball shirt is gone I’m going to be pissed.”

“We told you no brand names,” Deb reminded her.

“I thought you’d just blur them out.”

“That’s what we’ll be doing with your slogan T-shirts, yes, but brand names are off-limits. It was a simple instruction.”

“Slogan T-shirts? You mean like this?” Maren held up a grey T-shirt that read Cool story bro. Now make me a sandwich.

“Nice,” Willa said. This time her sarcasm was evident. Taylor, Alex and another girl named Chloe were standing right behind her, barely even attempting to hide the fact that they were waiting for Willa to choose her bed before they picked their own.

Whatever. I wasn’t going to be picky. The one underneath Maddie looked fine to me. No one raced me for it.

Deb went into the rules. No boys, lights out at eleven, and there would be a rotation of chaperones staying nearby in the Quack Shack to make sure we complied. “And Maren, for continuity’s sake we’re going to need you in the same clothes you were wearing on the helicopter.”

I hadn’t even noticed, but Maren was in the process of taking off her shirt. She was wearing a bathing suit. I wondered again why she hadn’t jumped; she had obviously been prepared.

“You can wear your awesome sandwich shirt tomorrow,” Deb said. “And by the way, that goes for all of you girls—no changing. Even those of you in bathing suits. Looking at you, Willa.”

“If you say so,” Willa said. Before this second I had never been sure that smirking was a real thing, but sure enough, it was. I wished I could remember if I’d ever seen her Instagram account. Probably filled with lots of artsy staged pictures of her doing trendy things. Faux hiking, drinking lattes, looking angstily toward the horizon, that sort of thing.

Deb’s walkie crackled.

“Deb, we need you by the staging area. We’ve got an issue with the C-cam.”

“Again?”

The voice came through even angrier. “Worse. I’m telling you, we’re freaking cursed—”

Deb cut him off. “Okay. I got it. Flying in.”

Author Bio:

Tiffany Brooks lives in San Francisco with her family and a bunch of pets, who luckily don’t object to being featured on her Instagram. The best thing about living on the west coast is she can find out what happens on Game of Thrones three hours ahead of air time. That, plus not having winter weather, means she’ll never move back east, although that doesn’t stop her New England family from asking when she’ll be moving “back home” to NYC or Connecticut. Reality Gold, her debut novel, kicks off the Shifting Reality Collection, a YA trilogy.
