A demented twin sister, a demon hijacking her powers, and a mysterious journal filled with more questions than answers—Halen needs her Guardian Dax more than ever. But if she confides in Dax, she fears he will never forgive her, not after all he sacrificed to help her vanquish Asair. Halen drowned Asair in a tornado of wings—at least, she thought she killed him. Why then does his mocking voice snake through her thoughts, enticing her to surrender her power? Maybe she screwed up—big time—but she will never allow Asair to control her magick. And when Etils’ fires threaten the Earth, suspicions surrounding Asair’s death rise, igniting restlessness within the realms. Her life in balance, Halen must race time, purge the demon’s soul before flames consume the Earth or the Tari strike first.

My Review:

4 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Another-World, Romance, Royal-Court, Supernatural, Teen--

In a world where there is a water based realm, a magic based realm and then the earth realm, there was always a balance, until the most ultimate evil was born- A blue moon siren without a guardian. Now that the evil that was Asair has been defeated by another blue moon siren Halen, recovery can occur- but Halen hears a voice that may belong to Asair in her head. He is not be gone like everyone believes, instead he has entered Halen. She is determined to once and for all defeat the evil that is now inside her, but refuses to tell anyone of her struggles, including her Guardian.

This is not your mother's version of Sirens and Mermaids, but instead an entirely new and dangerous spin on what we come to think of happy fairy tales. Mermaids are really scary, they like to poison peoples blood, pull them through drains and can use all forms of water against you. Sirens are hybrids who left unchecked can have the potential to destroy the world. I was so interested in the dynamic that exists in this series, brand new worlds/species/powers, making this series 100% unique and a great experience to read.

I am completely in love with the new covers for the series, they are completely eye catching and oh so gorgeous! I knew I wanted to read these books from the synopsis, but I will admit that the updates drew me in ever so much more.

Don't get me wrong, the original Coral and Bone cover image was really cool and very different (which sums up the series very nicely now that I think about it!)but overall very toned down and pretty much all the same color but in different shades, but the new cover really grabbed me.

And here is the original cover of Curses and Ash:

As a random side note, I loved where the titles come from, random things that seem so subtle but carry a lot of impact. For example, in book 1 Coral and Bone, the title came from the ingredients that make up the elixir that Halen has taken her whole life, a magic cure all if you will, she ignorantly has been consuming. I enjoy that Tiffany could tie in such things as the setting, the characters and the title together to create a comprehensive story.

I had an easier time getting into book 2 Curses and Ash and I think that was mainly due to the fact that the world has been built now and I was not so lost and floundering (ha, yes, that is a fish/mermaid joke, thanks for asking!) as I was when I first picked up the series. I enjoyed how much Halen has grown as a character from a bumbling, confused, totally in the dark little girl into a competent decisive woman. I really enjoyed watching her become who she was meant to be and set her own path instead of being a pawn as anticipated. I am a sucker for character growth and she is a prime candidate.

Get ready for action, danger, suspense, and some very surprising/heart-wrenching betrayal- and lets not forget the shocking twists and turns the plot took- this book will keep you on your toes and not all the characters that you have come to love will make it to the end of the journey alive (including my favorite character who I will not name now, but know that I miss them, sniff sniff). All kinds of magical species exist within the pages, be it dragons, mermaids and sirens to just name a few. Make sure to read the series in order for it to make any sense at all since Curses and Ash picks up a day or two after Coral and Bone ends- get ready to book binge too so you don't miss out on anything!.

I am voluntarily reviewing a complimentary copy of this book.

She is the author of Coral and Bone (The Siren Chronicles Book One) for which she also recieved a Watty Award in the category of Trailblazers. When not lost in Editland, you can find her reading a book from her towering TBR pile or kicking back and watching movies with her family.
