My Review:

4.5 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Another-World, Mystery, Romance, Supernatural, Suspense, Teen--

Aini enjoys her life being a candy apprentice with her scientist father, creating fun new and incredibly popular candy that can give the eater special gifts. But Aini has a secret, one that nobody can ever find out, or it could cost her her life. When she comes home from the market with her father's apprentices and finds her father missing, she knows the Campbells have taken him to use his brain to create subversive candy for their own purposes. Desperate to get him back, Aini has no idea what to do next. But little does she know, Thane is really a spy with the Campbells, not a university student and apprentice to her father- but he questions his purpose. Maybe together they can unravel the secrets.

Oh my geez, this was such a cool idea for a book. The synopsis was so vague but I originally fell in love with the cover (Yes, I am a cover snob but it is just so pretty!) and the fact the book is listed as Outlander meets Mortal Instruments- yes, please. Ok, truth be told, I would have read this book from the fact it is set in Scotland (one of my favorite places!) alone. I found this book to be the best of mystery, magic, suspense, world building, intrigue and romance unlike anything I have read before and I got lost in this world.

I was instantly captivated by the world that Alisha created right from the start. The story is set in an alternate version of Scotland, with The reader is thrust into a candy shop that creates special, scientifically driven candies that can do amazing things such as create feelings and visions, but underneath the happiness of the sugary concoctions is the rebellion and court issues. Not only do we have this brewing war and tension with spies and taxes, but there is magic too! Yep, there are those who have a dreaded sixth sense, an extra sense that can do things such as communicate with ghosts, have prophetic dreams or touch an item and get a vision. But these groups are hunted, locked up if discovered, never to be released. There was just so much going on within this story!

The book was dual narrated by both Aini and Thane, both with secrets they are keeping that would ruin their lives if the knowledge got out. It created the perfect dynamic for their relationship as friend as well as the underlying romance (which I highly enjoyed). Together, they are going to have to battle in the upcoming war, "using experimental candies and ghosts to stay alive"- a sure fire plan, of course. The Edinburgh Seer is just the first book in what I predict will be a fantastical series with magic, secrets and twist, and I can't wait for more.

I received this title for reviewing purposes.
