Review: Nowhere But Here by Katie McGarry

Book Blurb:

An unforgettable new series from acclaimed author Katie McGarry about taking risks, opening your heart and ending up in a place you never imagined possible

Seventeen-year-old Emily likes her life the way it is: doting parents, good friends, good school in a safe neighborhood. Sure, she's curious about her biological father—the one who chose life in a motorcycle club, the Reign of Terror, over being a parent—but that doesn't mean she wants to be a part of his world. But when a reluctant visit turns into an extended summer vacation among relatives she never knew she had, one thing becomes clear: nothing is what it seems. Not the club, not her secret-keeping father and not Oz, a guy with suck-me-in blue eyes who can help her understand them both.

Oz wants one thing: to join the Reign of Terror. They're the good guys. They protect people. They're…family. And while Emily—the gorgeous and sheltered daughter of the club's most respected member—is in town, he's gonna prove it to her. So when her father asks him to keep her safe from a rival club with a score to settle, Oz knows it's his shot at his dream. What he doesn't count on is that Emily just might turn that dream upside down.

No one wants them to be together. But sometimes the right person is the one you least expect, and the road you fear the most is the one that leads you home.

Genre: Teen, Romance--

Emily loves her nice quiet life with her mom and dad, with the yearly awkward visit from her biological father thrown in. But when the grandmother she never even knew existed dies, Emily is forced back to her mother's hometown to attend the funeral of a stranger and possible danger. Oz on the other hand longs for the day he can join his father's motorcycle gang and stop living his safe little life. When he is given the task of guarding the estranged daughter of the motorcycle gang leader, he wishes he could do anything else.

I am a big fan of Katie McGarry books and I have yet to be disappointed by her writing. She is able to create an emotional romantic journey between two unlikely people, as well as creating characters who are realistic with flaws and quirks yet you still root for them. This is the first in a new series focusing on a legal biker gang and the people who are members of it or who want to be members. To be honest, when I started the book I did not know it was about a biker gang and once I discovered that it was, I was a little nervous. All I know about biker gangs is that they are run by large men that like to wear leather who may or may not be violent and they may or may not be involved in illegal activities. Not really something that peaks my interest, but it is Katie McGarry so I figured what the heck, sure lets read.

I loved Emily from the beginning. She is incredibly quirky, slightly neurotic and tells it like it is. There are times where she rubbed me the wrong way when she acted younger than her age or unreasonable, like when she requested to speak to her mother and then to need to video chat with her 30 minutes later. What I did really like about her was the relationship she had with her adoptive father. The two of them were incredibly close and had a strong relationship outside of her mother, and he is the one who pushed her to reach out to contact her biological father. The fact that she was dead set on not establishing relationships with any of her biological people made me frustrated at first, but then her reasoning became clear and honestly I just felt sad for everyone who was victimized by the situation.

Oz on the other hand comes from this gritty world with biker bars, underage drinking, random hook-ups, strippers, violence, and not being wanted by his parents. He has had it rough and I did not like him in the slightest at for the first 4th off the book. But then I grew to know him and see the gentle person he was underneath, and Gawd did I love him. He was willing to take punishments for his actions if it meant he protected Emily and he was honest with his feelings from the start. I really loved Oz and I felt for him once I got past the sharp pokey edges of his defenses.

Like the rest of the McGarry's books, it was a fast read of a sweet romance. There are some many side characters that I want to know more about that I can imagine this series going on a long time. I did have a hard time getting into the story, and I was about a third of the way in before I was convinced it was a great book. I found myself getting teary eyed a few times also, which almost never happens to me. I was swept away by this love against all odds plot and I look forward to returning to the Reign of Hell club for another adventure.

I received this title from the author in exchange for my honest review.
