Blog Tour: The Proverbial Mr. Universe by Maria La Serra

Book Blurb:

Dear girl with the red scarf,

Love was never meant to be conquered,

you have to surrender to it.

Trust me. After all, I am Mr. Universe.

When the universe conveys a message, you listen.

Olivia Montiano just caught her fiancĂ© cheating. Now she is forced to question what she wants out of life and love. Striving to live up to her father’s unrealistic standards for the past twenty-three years, every decision she has ever made was with her father’s wishes in mind—until she finds mysterious, handwritten letters tucked away in places only meant for her. That’s when she realizes she’s been on the wrong path all along and gives her heart to a guy her father thinks is entirely wrong.

Washed-up abstract artist Nick Montgomery has had quite a few setbacks in life. He’s become accustomed to never needing anyone, thinking he’s just fine—until he meets the girl with the red scarf. She’s not his type. But the universe has other ideas. Nick has a secret he’s keeping from her, afraid it will bring their new relationship to a sudden halt.

Will they figure out what the Universe holds for them?

My Review:

3 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Romance--

Olivia has been living under other people's rules and regulations for a long time, having lost sight of who she is. Nick is an almost-washed up artist who is looking for inspiration when he realizes that he and Olivia keep crossing paths. When it becomes clear to Nick that the Universe has decided the two of them should be together, he pursues Olivia. Olivia is horrified by Nick's attention, but when she received notes from a mysterious Mr. Universe, she decides to give Nick a chance.

I was intrigued by the idea of this book with the idea of fate and the Universe shaping decisions and helping two people find each other. I am a sucker for fate and I was looking for a sweet sappy read. When I found out that Nick had a serious medical condition, I was even more excited to delve into this story (which may be odd, but I love medical books!). Overall I found the book to be an ok read, but it was not my absolute favorite contemporary romance. It was a fast read and I flew through it in only a few hours and I would like to read more from this author.

There were a few things that I would have liked a little differently in the book, not because there was anything wrong with the story but because I had expectations. I wish that Nick's health was a bigger part of the book, like he had an active issue or a scary during the story. Also, the way Nick responded to Olivia's job offer made me super depressed and I was a little peeved and surprised by his actions, it seemed to not-Nick. I did not like Olivia for at least half the story, I felt like she was a judgmental jerk who refused to open her eyes to see the potential that was Nick. The fact she refused to tell her father the truth and admit to her feelings about Nick drove me crazy. She did evolve as the story progressed and I came to like her as a person and as a character. I knew who Mr. Universe was right from the start of the notes, but I was interested to see Olivia figure it.

I would easily recommend this story to anyone who wants a cute romance to get lost in.

I received this title from the author in return for my honest review.
