EXCERPT:

“Thomas warned me about this, you know,” Bastian began, his voice pitched low, his booted feet striding close but not piercing my bubble.

I kept my gaze latched onto his feet and refused to look up. If I caught sight of his neck, of his blood pulsing in that lovely vein, I’d lose it. I wasn’t hungry yet and I wanted to keep it that way.

I cleared my throat, an action that took far too much effort and hurt for some reason. My throat was dry. Why was it so dry? “Warned you about what?”

“He said that, in time, I would want to be bitten. That the thought of you hungry or in pain would make me want to serve myself up so you didn’t suffer. That it was dangerous and blissful and would likely cause you to leave us.”

His feet moved closer, piercing my bubble. The heat of him washed over me, even though he was a few feet away.

I shook my head, which I instantly regretted because blood loss was a thing and I was losing a lot of it, the healing process taking far too long. Booth must have hit an artery.

“I don’t want to be tied to anyone. I don’t want a home. I don’t want friends.” It was a lie—a whole mountain of lies—but it was the truth, too. I didn’t want a tie to someone who was going to leave me. I didn’t want a home if I was going to lose it. I didn’t want friends that would die on me.

“Too bad.”

5 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Heart-wrenching, Mystery, Supernatural, Suspense, Urban Fantasy, Vampires, Witches, Zombies--

Sloane wakes up on what appears to be her grave with no idea how she got there or what is going on. When she attempts to get help, she ends up attacking another person only to find out that there is a paranormal world she had no idea existed- and it seems that she is now a part of it. Sloane has no idea what happened to her still but revenge is her goal and she has a lot of motivation.

This is my second book by this author (each was a first in a series) and I have decided that she is great at world building and character development. I would categorize this as an urban fantasy, where unbeknownst to the human world, a magical and dangerous supernatural world with magic uses, vampires, zombies, ghouls and werecreatures also exists. This is the perfect read for anyone who wants something fast, exciting, dangeous and unique. I am always on the look out for new urban fantasy and this author is now on my insta-buy list.

Night Watch was incredibly easy to read, I could sit down to read a chapter and find myself five chapters later with no idea how it happened and no interest in stopping. The pacing was incredibly fast, the whole book pretty much taking place in a few days (and a year, but that doesn't count) with never a dull moment. I like all the elements that made up the story- magic, supernatural creatures, angst, a smidge of lust that hopefully turn to romance (enemies to lovers I hope!), found families, action, a hint of mystery, a reanimated kitty (don't ask), an moody empath, and enough plot and world building left to know a second book will need to be available soon to satiate my needy heart.

Author Bio:

Annie Anderson is a military wife and United States Air Force veteran. Originally from Dallas, Texas, she is a southern girl at heart, but has lived all over the US and abroad. As soon as the military stops moving her family around, she'll settle on a state, but for now she enjoys being a nomad with her husband, two daughters, an old man of a dog, and a young pup that makes life... interesting.
