Review: Luminous (Dragon's Creed #1) by Katie French & Ingrid Seymour

Book Blurb:

Three sexy dragon shifters and a fierce heroine in a young adult reverse harem full of adventure and romance…

Lila McCarty used to see dragons.

That was before they killed her mother, before she told everyone what happened and people stamped the “crazy” label on her head. Now, as a senior in high school, she has no time for dragon legends or the tourists who putter around her lighthouse. She just wants to graduate and get the hell out.

But when twelve of Lila’s classmates, including her best friend, mysteriously vanish during the town’s dragon festivities, she tracks down the three mysterious guys who seem to know more than they let on. They’re sexy and infuriatingly charming, though that has nothing to do with why she’s enlisting their help.

It turns out Lila wasn’t crazy. Dragons are real. Not only that, the three dragon shifters have answers: her past, her role in their hidden world. It’s Lila’s duty to save her friends, whether she likes it or not.

When her classmates start turning up dead, she’s on a race against the clock--find the killer, or lose them all.

My Review:

5 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Another-World, Reverse Harem, Supernatural, Suspense, Teen--

"It's just an ancient hole in the ground, Lila. What could possibly go wrong?"

Lila will do anything to make sure she and her father aren't forced to move out of their home, even if it means doing her father's job of lighting the lamp in the tall historic lighthouse twice a day since his illness means he can't. While making the trek to the lighthouse one night during a storm, Lila swears she sees something rise from the lake, almost dragon like. But she must be seeing things, the dragon legends are just that- Legends... right?

I absolutely loved Lila right from her first appearance in the book. She was independent, caring, and resilient, and her affinity for rescuing wild life was endearing. Then when she went ahead and interfered in a mean girl getting potentially date raped I knew that Lila and I would have a long lasting love. I read someone else's review of the book and they mentioned that Ingrid is know for having strong, tough female characters so if Lila is an example of that, then I need to read more from Ingrid.

Mercedes, Lila's best friend, was my second favorite character in the story, even though her role in the plot was unfortunately cut short due to the whole going missing thing, but still her personality was big enough to win me over regardless of our short time together. She was fun, outrageous, fearless as well as supportive and protective over Lila. The interactions between her and Lila were hysterical. For example:

"For me, I'm on the prowl. Mama needs to get herself a date for prom- one who is da bomb."

"Since when did you start to refer to yourself as mama, and can I also call you that?"

"Do it at your own peril."

I found this more to be a paranormal mystery than a love story (or the typical RH where romance is key, plot maybe comes in second...if at all), which I very much appreciated. The plot was the focus of the book and little tiny pieces of truth kernels were dropped along the way to hook the reader and lead Lila to answers- and more questions about herself. Sure there were three attractive and very different guys introduced in the story, but they did not take center focus, instead we care about Lila, her friends, the truth...and about dragons. We always care about dragons!

"The first rule of Dragon Club," Santiago said, smirking, "is you don't talk about Dragon Club."

But anyway, I really enjoyed this fast, engaging, completely different read and without out a doubt I will be reading the rest of the book in the series as soon as they are available!

I am voluntarily reviewing an advance, complimentary copy of this book.
