Review: Charcoal Tears (Seraph Black #1) by Jane Washington

Book Blurb:

“You see, there is safety in simplicity… in a life of simple peace, where the electricity doesn’t dance across the backs of my eyelids, and the sparks don’t slither over my consciousness. Only asinine peace, where my paintings don’t seem to paint themselves, leaving me with terrible feelings of premonition and a chill beneath my fingernails.”

Seraph Black used to think that she was prepared for anything. She could last days without eating and she always walked away from the violent altercations with her father relatively unharmed. She survived working at the club and the drive to school every day in her mother’s rust-bucket of a car… but it all changed when Noah and Cabe came bulldozing into her life, careless of the precious secrets they picked apart in their quest to take over her world. She was even less prepared for the mysterious Miro and Silas, and nothing could have prepared her for the bond. The connection. The reason for it all.

Someone wanted her to stay away from her new friends, but she wasn’t willing to do that.

Everyone had secrets.

She wanted to know theirs. They wanted to own hers.

And the stalker?

He seemed to know everything already.

My Review:

5 Out Of 5 Stars
Genre: Mystery, Romance, Supernatural, Suspense, Teen--

Seraph does her best to keep her head down, not cause any trouble and be invisible, her only goal is to protect her younger brother and get through the day. But all of a sudden, there are two new boys at school and they draw attention to her, unwanted attention. Her life has gone from survival to complicated in a blink of an eye and Seraph is unsure how to feel about it. And that is not even mentioning the sparks she can shoot from her hands...

Oh my geez this book! This is the first in a four book reverse harem (but not in the dirty way- the most that happens was a pretty intense kiss, just saying!) series and I need the other three books like STAT because I have questions, concerns, thoughts and I need some answers like yesterday. The feels, the angst, they mystery, the bond, the complicated mess! I feel a little bit like I am totally rambling about my fan-girlness, but this is the irrational level of feelings that I am bursting with. It is taking a boat-load of self restraint to not just find the fourth book in the series and read how it all ends- I am pretty sure there will not be a happily ever after but I need it now!

This is exactly how I need all my reverse harem books to be, with the relationship dynamic between the boys and yes she is the most special of snowflakes but I don't care! She can be the most special of snowflakes as long as she becomes a more confident person and can handle the heartaches and trials that I am 100% sure are coming next. I am waiting for the day that Seraph saves the day, no help needed, yes she can. I really enjoyed how all four of the guys have a completely different personality (yes Cabe and Noah were not nearly as well fleshed out as Silas and Miro, but those boys have potential) and a different way of interacting with Seraph, be it teacherly to crazy intense-can't-keep-away-don't-touch-me-I'm-a-mess kind of way. And yes, as per all the other' reviewers out there- Silas has a special place in my heart, with his moody, damaged, crazy way.

Gawd, the ending, told from the Messenger's point of view, was so creepy and just about perfect. He (maybe he, could be she...just saying) is a whole new level of insane and unpredictable (their ability was scary!), and it is clear that the Messenger will cause as much pain as physically possible to everyone in their path.

This is actually my first book by Jane Washington even though I have been drooling over her books for years and I am pretty sure I have them all on my wishlist (or I own them!) and I am really happy with her writing style as well as her twisty mystery elements- yep not just a supernatural romance folks, but an engaging murder mystery as well. I can't wait to jump right in to something else she has written.
