My Review:
3 Out Of 5 Stars
Genre: Angels, Another-World, Supernatural--
Sera has been having nightmares every night, where something terrible happens and she has a brief glimpse of a man she desperately wants to know. She wakes up each morning feeling tired and depressed, not really wanting to do much with her life. Little does she know that there is an Angel, Nathanael, watching over her (against his will, but still), trying to do his job and protect her, but from what he has no idea. Sera plays a big role in the battle of good vs. evil, if she can just figure out what her nightmares mean and come to terms with the upheaval her life takes.
I will make this review fairly short and to the point because I am not a huge fan of being negative. Overall it was interesting concept and plot, but I just had the hardest time engaging with this story. I do love myself some angel stories with good vs evil and the blurring of the lines, but it can be hit or miss for me if I end up liking the books. This was the same problem I encountered here, cool idea but I could not connect with either Sera or Nathanael, making it a challenge to push on at first. About half way through the book picked up and the plot became more twisty and interesting, where I could not predict what turns were coming and I enjoyed that aspect of the book.
I liked the idea of Sera and her transition into what she would become, I just found her to be a little bit flat as a character. She was an adult (her age was not specified but "adultness" was implied), yet she at times seemed more like an awkward teenager with no confidence or life experience who needed her parents and friends permission and advice for everything. I guess what I expected from her did not match up with what I received. Nathanael was not easy to relate to either, but maybe that was on purpose since he didn't understand human emotions or ideas. He would do actions to influence behaviors, but reasoning was kind of missing as to why or how he felt about the action.
The story and dialogue jumped around a bit as well, making me feel like I was missing something. I personally prefer character driven books with well developed engaging characters, which I felt like this was at times lacking. The book did get more interesting and I liked the direction the plot took, which is why the book ended up getting 3 stars. I am sure that other people will really love this story, it was just not for me and my picky ways. I would like to read more from this author in the future.
I received this title from the author in return for my honest review.
