Blog Tour & Giveaway: The Reader by M.K. Harkins

Book Blurb:

Hunted, shot, and without her memory, eighteen-year-old Ann Baker wakes in shallow water on a deserted Pacific Northwest island. She is soon approached by two young men claiming to be her friends. Something isn’t right, but when gunshots sound, Ann is left with little choice but to allow Devon and Archer to help her escape. Soon she finds herself in their North Bend mountain compound, where the higher evolved humans claim to be mind-readers. While Ann heals, she realizes they believe her to be one of the last and most powerful of all – The Lost One.

She’s welcomed by most with opened arms, but not everyone is happy about her arrival. A jealous adversary has plans for Ann, which spirals the entire Reader community into chaos.

As lies, murder, and betrayal threaten to rip apart the once harmonious mountain dwellers, Ann is thrust into making a decision that could save or devastate not only The Readers, but all of mankind. But there’s just one glitch: by doing so it may require her to make the ultimate sacrifice.

My Review:

3.5 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Mystery, Supernatural, Romance--

Ann wakes up on the b each with no memory of how she got there or who she is. When two strange men show up and try to help her, she figures she will go with them instead of getting shot by the police who apparently are after her. When she is taken to a secret compound and told that she has amazing abilities, it is almost too much for her to handle. There is a world that the humans don't know about, yet it influences their actions. Ann is in the middle of a war between supernatural races that she doesn't understand.

This was a very fast read for me. I honestly blew through the book in a single sitting because I found the writing engaging, the plot interesting and the characters relatable, all things that I look for in a story. Not to sound negative (because I thought this was a good thing) but the book went right to the point, without verbose writing to go off in tangents or angsty decision making dilemmas. The book as per my ereader was 170 pages and I feel like that was the perfect length to deliver the complete story. The story was a paranormal mystery with romantic elements and action/danger for some flavor. There is another series that this reminded me of because of the Jacks and the body snatching, yet this was different enough though that I know it is its own story and world.

There was a sorta-kinda love triangle (love square??) in the story, where 4 people were prophesied to meet their soulmate, the chosen one, who in turn would lead to the start of the war between races. I knew who I wanted Ann to match up with, almost right from the start of the book, but I do have a thing for the stand-offish jerk guys who secretly have a heart of gold (sigh). Anyway, I can say I enjoyed how that aspect played out, but there was no guarantee that I would get what I wanted.

So the ending. It appears as if everything is resolved, but alas, someone is watching and they have other plans in mind. I thought that this was a standalone (which I guess it technically still could be) but the ending felt as if something else sinister was brewing that I may need to know about (asap). Just when I thought it was perfect, a dark cloud hovers... Anyway, I enjoyed this read and would love to read more by this author since I enjoyed her style.

I received this title from the author in return for my honest review.

Author Bio:

MK has always been a voracious reader. After hitting a dry spell of reading material, she decided to write the kind of book she'd like to read. This resulted in the creation of her debut novel, Intentional. (Award for Best Sweet Romance - eFestival of Words- August 2014)

Unintentional, her second book, is based on the life of one of the characters in Intentional. Unintentional was written as a stand-alone book.

Breaking Braydon and Taking Tiffany have both been released. Available on Amazon.

The Reader is MK's latest project, due out 2016. When she's not writing novels, she likes to spend her free time traveling the world, splashing in mud puddles (She lives in Seattle, what can she say?), watching movies and reading (!)

MK also runs her own business in her current hometown of Mercer Island, Washington

You can find her on Goodreads, Twitter, Facebook and her website
