Blog Tour & Giveaway: 27 Days to Midnight by Kristine Kruppa

Book Blurb:

Everyone in Dahlia's world knows when they're going to die. Except her.

Her father has never shown her the pocket watch counting down the days she has left to live. When he sacrifices himself to save her from her scheduled death, Dahlia abandons her comfortable home and sets off after his murderer to uncover the secrets her father died to protect…and the time research that could bring him back to life.

Then she meets Farren Reed. She should hate him. He’s an enemy soldier, a cowardly deserter, and the most insufferable man Dahlia’s ever met. Still, she needs all the help she can get, and Farren is the only chance she has to find the man who murdered her father. But Farren has only twenty-seven days left on his watch.

In that time, Dahlia must recover her father’s time research, foil a psychotic general’s plot, and learn to survive in a world that will never be the same. But the research holds secrets more dangerous than she had ever imagined. She will have to choose what is most important: revenge, Farren's life, or her own. And time is running out.

My Review:

4 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Another-World, Mystery, Romance, Steampunk, Survival, Royal-Court--

Dahlia has been waiting for her 18th birthday to have her watch unlocked so she can see how much time she has left. Little did she know, Dahlia is scheduled to die on her 18th birthday with so many unanswered questions plaguing her. When her circumstances alter, Dahlia is off on a mission of revenge. Along the way she encounters Farren, an enemy soldier who agrees to help her on her mission. Farren has his own agenda, as well as the looming 27 days left until his anticipated death, as shown by his watch countdown. The two very different characters embark on an epic, dangerous quest. Along the way they find new friends as well as an unexpected relationship, but can they both survive the end of their time?

I love steampunk. Be it stories, worlds, gadgets, ideas and especially the costuming. I was excited to get my hands on what sounded like a fun and unique steampunk adventure. I mean really, how could I resist such a pretty eye-catching cover? I was lured in by the cover and topic and I stayed immersed in the story due to the writing and the characters. I really enjoyed this story and the complex world the author created. I love the premise of the world, where people have a designated watch they are linked to that shows how much time they have left to live. If the watch is damaged, then the person can't heal until the watch is fixed. Also, the book had a romance in it that for some reason I never expected, which made me that much more happy because I love books with romance (call me a sap, but a little love can go a long way in increasing my love for the book).

The story is told from alternating points of view, mainly from Dahlia and Farren who I consider to be the main characters, but there are a few extra voices thrown into the mix along the way, including the dastardly Macall. Each character is well developed with a distinct voice and personality. I really liked Dahlia's spunk and tenacity, as well as her growth into a more well rounded person. Farren is a bit of a rascal, but I liked him and his down to earth attitude, even with his creeping doom and alcoholic ways. The side characters were all quirky and fun and I enjoyed the dynamic between everyone.

The world was detailed with a solid mix of victorian and gadgetry/technology. The story wrapped up completely as if this is a standalone book, but I would enjoy another adventure with this motley crew as well as this crafty universe. This was my first book by this author and I would gladly read more.

I received this title in return for my honest review.
