My Review:

3 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Another-World, Mystery, Romance, Supernatural--

Kyra has been on the run from her family when she stumbles into a portal that leads her to the carnival, which seemed to be expecting her arrival. She takes to the life of the carnival for supernatural, and even uses her talent as a dragon to breathe fire as an act. At the carnival she finally feels accepted and not like a half bred freak, also known as the Moorigad. Just when she feels like her life is what she wants, trouble shows up.

Let me just mention that this book was not at all like I expected the books to be. It's not a bad thing per se, but the story I received was not like the synopsis led me to believe. The trilogy needs to be read in order since each book bleeds into the next, with the ending of one the start of the next. I would classify this series as a fantasy romance. The romance was slow to build and so subtle that I did not see it at first. But as the book progressed, I realized that the basis for the entire series is romance. Sure there are other things going on, with mystery and intrigue, as well as a sentient carnival that changes and evolves as well as invites people to discover it, and then all types of supernatural elements thrown in the mix. The book is listed as a young adult story, but I would not agree with that at all. The main character has a youthful appearance as if she is in her teens, but she mentions she is in her 80s and there is sex and other adult content thrown around, as an FYI.

I found the writing style to be really lyrical, as if this was poetry in book form. There were no easy words or straightforward descriptions used, everything was complicated and involved, with the most interesting of mental images created by the author. It made the story have an old word vibe to it, even as the book alternated between different realms. I thought the writing was pretty and different, but it did not help me to connect with the book. I thought the book was interesting, but I did not find myself really engaged with what was happening or with the characters. For the most part, the story alternates narration between Kyra and Sebastian, and a few others thrown in here and there. I felt fairly ambivalent towards Kyra, she lacked real feelings at times and was overly analytical of what was going on around her and her own thoughts. Sebastian on the other hand had more emotions and depth I felt, but was just so full of secrets that I did not really understand what he was doing or wanted. As a side note, I was confused a good majority of the first book about what was going on. The supernatural elements existed but were not described, things happened but I did not know why or how, and strange "dragon phrases" were used as a form of expression for Kyra and I did not get them.

Overall I felt like this was an interesting world that the author created with a very unique writing style, but I just did not engage fully into the plot the way I usually desire while reading. I am sure others would love this book and the romance provided, but it just was not my favorite. I can appreciate the intricacies the author created and I would like to read more from her in the future.

I received this title in return for my honest review.
