There Be Demons
By M. K. Theodoratus
Genre: Paranormal Suspense
Age category: Young Adult
Release Date: 26 September 2017

Blurb:
Heroes come in all shapes.

The war for Andor has lasted a century. Humans and their allies, the Angeli, fight demons from another plane who need a warmer planet to hatch and raise their young. Trebridge becomes Ground zero when Abraxas, a minion of the demon Prince Vetis, opens a secret portal into the city. The demons’ goal is to build an army to subjugate the city before the humans realize they are under attack.

Standing in the demons’ way are two disparate groups: the humans of Andor and their Angeli allies who command gargoyle warriors.

Leading the four gargoyles guarding Trebridge is Gillen, a proven war hero who uses magic to fight demons. But Gillen is an outcast, mocked for his tuft of hair that normal gargoyles lack. It’s up to him to prove once and for all that he’s worthy of his command, in spite of dissention in his ranks. When Gillen asks the Angeli Commanders for reinforcements to fight the growing demon menace in Trebridge, headquarters send four human teens from the projects.

The leader of the humans is Britt, a 14-year-old half-Hispanic girl who is one of the four magic-possessing Chosen. But Britt was never trained in the art of magic, and like most girls her age, spends her days preoccupied with school and romance. Like Gillen, she must rise above her station in life–if she is to save the ones she loves.

But Gillen and Britt are facing formidable demon foes, Abraxas: a chicken-headed demon who possesses several humans as part of his plan to build the demons’ base in Trebridge and power-hungry Prince Vetis who is his commander. Neither will let the deaths of expendable humans get in their way of the conquest.

In There Be Demons, author M.K. Theodoratus spins a brilliant tale of good versus evil. In this thrilling Young Adult fantasy novel, unlikely heroes rise to challenge a relentless enemy. Join them as they risk everything to save their city.

Demon lord Prince Vetis surged from the soft dirt of the portal. His magnificence blazed brighter than Andor’s setting sun. Dim though it was, the greenish sky made his three lidless, reddish eyes blink and water. He stepped under a tree for protection. The narrow portal, stretched by his power to accommodate the wide horns sprouting from the sides of his head, closed with a soft hiss behind him. He rubbed his aching neck muscles. He’d only been able to relax his tilted head once during the long journey between the cold Gehenathh and the city of Trebridge.

Alert for Angeli attacks, Vetis stayed in the copse of trees and bushes that hid him from the low building up the hill. The new operating base was supposed to be a counter-attack behind enemy lines, but he had his doubts. The minion had promised a new, secure entry into the human world, unknown to the humans’ Angeli defenders. Vetis snorted through wide nostrils. The scene did not impress, except for the number of imps cavorting on the field leading down to the river.

Broken trees grew in clumps across the crumbling expanse of asphalt around a dilapidated warehouse. The scene was deserted except for the splendid pack of imps. His minion, Abraxas, had boasted about his first hatching. The size of the clutch surprised Vetis. Most of these were twice the size of a Gehenathh brood, if a nest managed to hatch in the increasing cold. Even the nobility had problems raising a clutch.

Still, one sneeze would blow that building down. The braggart plans to hide a legion of demons in it? Vetis snorted again. I should have come sooner. Abraxas, the simpering idiot, has accomplished next to nothing except to hatch a batch of eggs. I need this base operational now.

Tufts of sickly grass traced thin, yellowish lines through the asphalt of the abandoned lot. Cans, boxes, shingles, bottles, and paper of all descriptions littered the cracked paving all the way down to the riverbank. The stench from the passing garbage barges on the river wafted on the shifting breeze. Somewhere upwind, a packinghouse discharged the scent of rotting flesh into the twilight, making the demon commander smile wide enough to reveal long fangs.

What a lovely place! If only the air had a sharper bite. Extending his senses to scan the area, Prince Vetis relaxed. Ahh, not a hint of Angeli taint. Perhaps Abraxas is right. Only four gargoyles defend the city. Can my gamble pay off?

Review: A Dangerous Game (Untamed) by Madeline Dyer

Book Blurb:

A standalone novel set in the UNTAMED world...

LOVE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO BE EASY.

All her life, Keelie Lin-Sykes has known what she wants: to protect her brother and sisters by killing as many of the soulless Enhanced Ones as she can. Oh, and to have fun while she’s doing it. After all, hiding in a secret Untamed community, while the group’s Seer warns them of danger, shouldn’t mean that life can only be serious, right?

But, when a face from her past suddenly—and secretly—shows up, Keelie’s catapulted back into the very world she's been trying to escape from for the last ten years: a world full of guilt, lies, and...love. And the deeper Keelie gets into this world, the bigger the risks become.

Now, Keelie must deceive those she values most in order to protect them, even though her actions will destroy everything she knows and haunt her family forever. But she can't ignore her feelings--not again. And Keelie will do anything to be with the man she loves.

My Review:

4 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Dystopian, Mystery, New Adult, Romance, Survival, Suspense--

Keelie's life was ripped apart the night the Enhanced showed up and destroyed her family with their desire to "fix" the Untamed. After watching her best friend Red die and losing her parents, Keelie has spent the last 10 years training to destroy the Enhanced. On a routine raid, Keelie's world is turned upside down when someone from her past shows up causing her to rethink what is important and what she is willing to sacrifice.

I have been eyeballing the Untamed series for years but for some reason never picked them up to read, so when I saw that this was a standalone novel set in that world I figured that this was the perfect time to jump in. A Dangerous Game was a complete story, no need to have read a previous book and no start to a series, which is kind of nice to pick up a book and know you are holding the entirety. It was true that you don't need to read the Untamed series first, but I am now ever more interested in reading them since this hints at a lot of cool things that I am sure are well detailed in those books.

When I read the synopsis for the book and I saw that it was listed as a Dystopian Romeo and Juliet I was really interested in how that would play out (and slightly hesitant since I pretty much hate the actual Romeo and Juliet play). I was pleasantly surprised to find that this did have a forbidden love between two characters that most likely should not be together, but to me, that was not the complete focus of the book (and this is not a YA book, more a NA dystopian). This was very much so an action survival story with some romance and world building thrown in, and I liked the dynamic of the story.

Well, I never saw the end coming, I was super shocked by the turn of events. Seriously, shocked here- I felt like my jaw was hanging open in surprise for most of the last chapter. This was my first book by Madeline and color me impressed. She was able to create a complete world, detailed original characters and a twisty plot to keep me guessing. I would love to check out more from her in the future, especially the Untamed series from the beginning.

As a side not, if you are looking for a happily ever after, this may not by a read for you. If you want a gritty, action filled, future dystopian read, then this is a perfect choice.

Review: The Breakup Support Group by Cheyanne Young

Book Blurb:

After four years of first love bliss, Isla Rush just got dumped.

Any hope she has of winning her ex-boyfriend back is shattered when the town rezones her neighborhood, forcing her to spend senior year at a wealthy high school in the next town over.

With a broken heart consuming her soul, Isla can’t focus on anything, except maybe Emory Underwood—a ridiculously hot guy who dates a new girl almost every day. She can’t help but crush on him, even though it’s wrong.

When memories of her ex make her cry in second period, the school counselor sends Isla to a club that meets during lunch. The Break-Up Support Group is a collection of broken-hearted misfits who are all helping each other heal.

Just when Isla’s heart is finally on the mend, Emory shows up, forced to atone for all the broken hearts he’s caused over the years. While hiding her massive crush, she helps him understand the seriousness of breaking a heart.

In turn, Emory offers to help Isla get back on the dating scene by agreeing to be her fake date for the homecoming dance. Isla gladly accepts the ruse, because if anyone can make her into a desirable girlfriend, Emory can! There's just one small problem.

Isla's little crush on Emory might be exactly full blown. And a homecoming fake date with him could push her over the edge to possibly uttering the "L Word!"

Isla can't afford another heartbreak so soon after the last one. She will have to resist his charms, refuse to look into those dreamy eyes, and above all else, not make the mistake of letting him kiss her.

If only she hadn't let her guard down at the end of the night, under the light of her porch in a toe-curling kiss moment of weakness. And now, after months of Break-Up Support Group therapy, and with a heart fully on the mend, Isla has just handed it over to a guy who knows full well just how to break it.

My Review:

3.5 Out Of 5 Stars

Genre: Romance, Teen--

Isla Rush could not be happier- she has the love of Nate, her boyfriend of 4 years, her popularity and her senior year all planned out. But then something unexpected happens and her school has been rezoned, sending Isla to a completely different high school away from the nice, safe world she knows. To make matters worse, Nate dumps her because it is easier than dating someone who goes to a different school. Isla’s world has come crashing down- leading her to the broken-hearted support club…and Emory.

I was so incredibly uncomfortable for Isla while reading the first half of the book. This girl needed an intervention, hard! The fact she texted Nate daily regardless of his lack of response made me want to grab her phone and hide it. They way she begged him not to break up with her at the party made me leery, but then her response to his request made me cheer and hope she would power through… Unfortunately, she had desperation and despair down to an art and I was very afraid that she would never come back to herself- thank goodness for her new friends! It was so easy to see that Isla was not really a person when the story started, but kind of a shell that was created to please her ridiculous boyfriend Nate- seriously, all her activities were either to make him stuff or support his football team (even her “friends” were conditional on Nate). As someone who spent all 4 years of high school with the same person, I understand how easy it would be to fall into the role of “girlfriend” instead of an individual. I will admit that I was a little disappointed that she didn’t find new hobbies or learn more about herself throughout the book away from her safe Nate world, it just kind of seemed that she pretty much just went to school, did homework and had support club.

I know this is a teen romance, but it would have been great if she had stayed single for a while longer (or actually all the book) and she and Emory could have just been good friends that helped the other grow, but alas that is not how romances go. I was a little confused how she was heart-broken over Nate yet still really wanted Emory- it seemed too fast for the level of upset she was experiencing. I enjoyed Emory as a character, completely himself all the time, upfront about what he wanted, even if girls didn’t believe him. And his actions at the end of the book were pretty swoony and heroic (even though I would have preferred she saved herself -or not been in that situation to begin with!). I did really like that Emory and she became friends before any sort of romance occurred (on his part), actually getting to know and like the other person with no expectations (or special snowflake ideas). I think that it helped that she was herself with him, not trying to impress, no special outfit, makeup or actions to really let him get to know who she was. Speaking of great friend relationships, I loved the support group kids and the dynamic between them all- once they were introduced I could not put the book down! Here is a group of strangers that came together to heal and help others heal and they were better, more supportive friends than any of the kids she knew for years. I think this misfit group of kids was the best thing to happen to Isla- she needed to be shaken out of her complacency and experience life.

As a side note, this book should come with a warning label that it may cause uncontrollable pizza cravings! At every lunch meeting of the support group they ate pizza (with delicious description included!) and I had to order a pizza by the time I was finished with this book, the urge could not be fought. If you don't like pizza... well, then you may need to consult with a medical professional to get to the bottom of that issue (hehe, teasing -to each their own).

Overall I found this to be a cute fast read, perfect for a rainy day when you need a cute, light pick-me-up!

I received this title for reviewing purposes.

And what if she gets him something that’s nicer than what he gets her? That would be really awkward. Asking him what he would like is completelyout of the question. Maybe she should ask his friends for help.

After a rocky start, Tyler and Layla’s relationship is everybody’s relationship goals. But can Tyler and Layla survive the holidays without losing their cool?

RIGHT GIFT WRONG DAY is a hilarious companion novella to RIGHT TEXT WRONG NUMBER from Natalie Decker.

Goodreads / Amazon

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Omigod! Omigod! I don’t know why I just agreed to meet his entire family. Are we really at that step in our relationship? I don’t think I’m ready for this.

I didn’t meet Adam’s family until we had been seeing each other for a good five months, and even that was by pure accident. I ran into them during one of those free physical screenings at school. Talk about awkward. His mom had this look on her face like, “who’s this girl hugging my son?” She called me “dearest,” and Adam, well, he stood there turning red like I was embarrassing him in front of his mother. His little sister gave me the stink eye. His dad kept clearing his throat.

Tyler and I have only been dating officially for a week. What if his family hates me? What if they take one look at me and tell him to dump me?

I’m freaking out. The other issue that has me worked up; is Christmas. Yeah, I know it comes every year. But things around our house have been a little bland since my dad died. Our house used to be decked out in decorations. Since my dad’s death, my mom just puts up a tree, if you can even call it that. It’s a five-foot artificial tree, and this year, only two parts of it are lit. She doesn’t care enough to buy a new one or add lights to it. I miss our banisters and every other section of the house decorated with ribbons and garland and the smell of cinnamon wafting throughout the house. Instead, it looks like we’re celebrating Halloween or some other holiday we’re not really into.

Aside from my house lacking the Christmas spirit, I’m worried about gifts. Not in receiving but giving. Am I supposed to only get Tyler a gift, or am I supposed to get ones for his family too? And what do I possibly get a guy who already has everything?
